getting a decent chunk of new followers so time for another introduction thread - hi! im mira lazine, im a transfem anarchist journalist who primarily writes for the trans worker-owned news outlet i helped found, @transnews.network, and my own newsletter, The Free Radical!🧵

this is good advice. this includes things like quote dunking and sharing screenshots. we don't need to engage with any of these jackasses at all, and angrily boosting them helps literally no one

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

noticing a lot of americans trying to find any excuse to justify using AI, by now falsely claiming that people in other countries Actually Love AI And Support It. seeing this claimed abt leftists in brazil which is laughable considering leftists there also hate AI

yall see the news today of journals trying to shove AI in the reviewing process. yall see the liberal figureheads drinking the koolaid and going down the slop rabbithole. no one wants this shit and the only people who do are either the ones who benefit from it or people who lose brain cells to it

as someone who does movement journalism, i cant help but find it deeply irresponsible and disrespectful to blanket characterize whole fucking region's worth of organizers in one fell swoop because you want to justify using the plagiarism slop machine that's degrading your skills

i feel like a few people making ai generated anti-bolsonaro videos to reach boomers on social media does not characterize an entire movement's organizing strategy and it seems myopic and deranged to try and spin people's strategies in favor of what is a dogshit tool made by western fascists

Despite Seattle's reputation as a trans haven, the University of Washington has reacted to escalating attacks on trans rights with silence — even after a trans student was murdered. But trans academic workers, unionized with UAW, are fighting back. Our latest, from @thefreeradical.org.

As the gentry try to normalize transphobia in every avenue of life, a common talking point they love to share is the alleged high 'detransition' and 'regret' rates among trans people. These allegedly high rates are completely false, and based on bunk science. 🧵

apparently theres a discourse on tumblr about like, who is "more homeless" than other people? what the hell are we doing, how is that remotely productive to punch horizontal at one another over who had worse experiences. someone couchsurfing is not the enemy of someone on the streets

...yeah those people exist but they sure as fuck arent common nor in power, so why the hell give them focus. anyone serious whose experienced that shit knows to not be an asshole and recognize that ppl can do whatever the hell they want with their money in that position, isnt anyones business

idk boss the internet discourse cycles constantly finding ways to drive wedges among marginalized people feels realllly convenient right now, and frankly id beware any weird takes intent on dividing like heavily suffering communities.

i say this as someone who was kicked out onto the streets and had to figure out some shitty motel to stay in where i had shady guys sexually harassing and threatening me. seeing others mention the few formerly homeless ppl who became assholes judging others for using drugs etc, and like...

there is no such thing as the neutral observer in journalism. there is no such thing as "objective journalism". These ideas are just bullshit marketing meant to make you think their work is somehow better than someone who openly cares about the subjects they investigate and report on.

Mira@thefreeradical.org

ill be honest i think muckraking journalism should be the default and attempts at "objective" journalism should be laughed off the fact that its got enough derision among the gentry elite that the term emerged as an insult is a testament to the degree that mainstream journalism is a joke

no one pictures a modern mainstream journo when they picture one thats honorable. they think of the ones running into danger, the ones uncovering stories that risk their lives, the ones actually fighting for a cause that matters pretending that someones objective just cause they have money is nuts

like idk boss journalism thats about questioning and holding to account those in power seems far more beneficial to society than journalism that licks the boots of the powerful. i think if people with institutional power approve of ur journalism, ur doing something wrong

it was made in response to against me's song 'i was a teenage anarchist,' about disillusionment from the anarchist movement from transphobia. basically saying that other people being pieces of shit shouldn't mean you give up on what you believe in. i think about it a lot.

look, in the end, every one of us is going to die. we like to pretend we wont, but its inevitable. death comes for us all. when its your time, will you prefer having lived your life hiding away in fear, or standing up for what's right? making an actual impact in others' lives, actually helping ppl?

i know what id prefer, and ive made my choice long ago. i view every day i breathe as borrowed time that im grateful for, and a way i can at least make a small impact in someone's life. i try to be a better person today than i was yesterday. i cant imagine living any other way.

like... we talk about wanting to be on the right side of history. everyone does, its a way to feel some type of justice in a world filled with evil but if youre not actually working to fight injustice, youre part of the problem. privately held views dont keep people from getting killed.

you dont need to be a superhero and save everyone, but you should fucking be a part of movements trying to protect other people's lives. you should be a part of movements trying to protect others' lives. you dont need to be a leader, you just gotta do *something* to help make a tangible, real impact

and no, posting memes and making snarky comments about politicians does not count, and in fact has never counted once. any organizing that occurs over social media is in the realm of fundraising and making ppl aware to allocate more resources and hands to help ppl struggling.

i think the real thing that makes someone a leftist is when you start to actually give a shit about movements and issues that don't affect you. anyone can stand up for things that affect them. but it takes actual principles to stand up for groups you're not a part of. most people dont do this.

im just so so so so tired of seeing people who proclaim themselves leftists turn around and praise the oppressors of other people. its spineless and disgusting.

people like to cite the poem about the nazis eventually coming for you after other marginalized groups are left. and while thats true, it shouldnt even take you being affected to take action. you should just do it because its the right thing to do. you shouldnt need another reason.

Boosting Soad and Omar in Gaza. The United States is continuing to support Israel as they bomb more civilians, more families, more innocents and starve people who just want to live their lives. Keep them afloat, do what you can.

what sacrifices have you made for people who arent your own? what have you done to fix the problems in the world that never impacted you? have you done *anything* for other people who dont remind you of yourself?

reminder that history doesnt have to repeat itself and you dont, in fact, need to hand it to the fascists for blatant propaganda. reminder that bootlicking and siding with the fascists out of fear when they give you the smallest of boons is what fucking got us in this mess in the first place

stop living your life motivated by fear and start thinking about why the world is the way it is, and focus on actual god damn solutions and not just doomscrolling until you find something that makes you feel good and jumping on that as your savior

and to white queers, stop acting like being queer means that youre exempt from racism. that isnt how intersectionality works. so so so many of yall are virulently fucking racist but use queerness as a way to try and get out of jail free and its fucking pathetic

Boosting Ahmed in Gaza, he's currently struggling with his family against a famine inflicted by Israel, which by the way is still being heavily aided and abetted by the United States government

i will be honest the weird amount of sudden praise for the navy and marines from a bunch of trans people for allowing a handful of trans soldiers to keep doing imperialism that im seeing on this site is deeply uncomfortable, especially seeing people praise a meme about a pro-trans nazi as "based"

or does it not matter to yall because the military kills brown people across the world. idk im just begging people to be fucking consistent and not to clap like seals at what is very clearly table scraps given as little more than PR for military recruitment. legit propaganda shit

did yall forget theres a boycott on the nyt. did yall forget the continuous queerphobia in all branches of the military, and that many of the claims of queerness in the military are basically just taking homophobic injokes literally. did yall forget all the people who the military murders constantly
