I had a lovely time at World Fantasy even if I missed most of the programming! For those of you who heard the sad tale of "work explosion 6pm Friday, on a project I am responsible for fixing with Monday deadline"... I am pleased to report that it is FIXED.

“That’s right: We can no longer have towering, absurdly hirsute, functionally deranged drainpipes made from bears murdered with medieval weaponry on the heads of our rigidly immobile palace guards, because of Woke.” Amazing. Read the footnotes.

Patricia McKillip. All of it. Core arc from "The Sorceress and the Cygnet," but made vast and sprawling by declaring that all of her standalone novels occur in the same setting.

Took me a while to make this coalesce this, the key is that Cygnet has an amazing thematic/character arc but a frustrating plot. So gut that plot and fill it with season after season of intrigue and numinous wonder! The show would be titled "The Heart of the Cygnet." (IYKYK)

To return to a quote I use often (and to cite its author @orbitaldropkick.bsky.social): The nature of royalty is a continuous cutting motion.

You know, fantasy has a classism problem. And I am far from immune. We still hold up nobility with very little scrutiny -- yes, there are bad kings and good kings, but just like billionaires, can any of them actually be good? Or is that just convenient propaganda?

Fellow authors: without any context, what's the first line of your current WIP? (WIP #2): "You've forced me to be a truth-teller, so here's my truth: I regret nothing."

I've got a piece in this anthology! About faith and facing uncertainty... and about pirates, retired warlords, and priestess-magi of the ocean's sunken treasures. The story's long road includes time as a Writers of the Future finalist - until I withdrew when I learned about their shenanigans.

Today in IQ is BS!

Nico Dosenbach@ndosenbach.bsky.social

We've known that socioeconomics (SES) matters for the 🧠. New & 🤯 is that SES drowns out all other brain associations, incl. IQ. If you train an algorithm to predict IQ from brain data, it's still way better at predicting SES. Science Mag: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... @smarek0502.bsky.social 👀🧵👇

More integral, even. Academic writing is a tool for thinking, and it's the brainstorming and outlining where ideas coalesce and solidify.

“Use AI to brainstorm but not to write.” “Use AI to help you outline but not to write.” These are commonly proposed as “ethical” ways for undergrad students to use AI, but I’m sorry, brainstorming & outlining are just as integral to writing as the actual construction of sentences.

It’s not like I’m angry at anyone who lists seemingly every publication they’ve ever had, it’s just that a better cover letter is just “Dear Magazine, I hope you like my story. My other stories have appeared in X, Y, and Z, among others. Thank you.”

Kaleidotrope@kaleidotrope.bsky.social

I don't know who needs to hear this, but a cover letter isn't a CV.

Ugh, this silly meme. 5 words? What women want is the true secrets, the important things. Fourteen words to make someone fall in love with you forever. Seven words to make them go without pain. How to say good-bye to a friend who is dying.
