CBC’s The Fifth Estate did a great piece on this movement in Canada. They covered the CRA’s major gaffe that resulted in some $300 Million in erroneous tax refunds to 19 people. No charges laid It’s fraud, no matter where it’s happening. www.cbc.ca/news/fifthes... www.wired.com/story/the-ri...

This is truly the only way companies can invest in technology-mass layoffs. It’s not that the people aren’t still needed, but they just can’t get it past their CFO and Board.

I've had this tab open since the story published, and finally got around to reading it. Hell yeah, fuck yeah. Let us indeed 'dismantle the business school as a single high-status silo that professionalizes private gain' this is an important conversation www.nytimes.com/2026/10/18/o...

It's more than a suggestion, this is coordinated with the chiefs and with the feds. They are committed in principle to doing it, though details remain: www.cbc.ca/news/indigen...

I get they're inextricably intertwined but I kind of feel like leaning so much into how he was the longtime best buddy of the world's most notorious sex criminal has given it something of the feel of a political gotcha rather than the important part, which is that the president raped people.

This is fantastic. “We’re smart but not wise…the modern world values nature not for its whole, but for its parts.”
The first 2 minutes of this exceptional documentary are a very good indication of the high quality of this brilliant 1 and a half hour journey through fear and despair and arriving at hope.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
I knew of this guy when he was in newspapers. Forgot all about him, but William’s Lake was an area that oozed community - much of it fiscally conservative. We had to work with the paper a lot at the BC Federation of Labour, where I was at the time. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Definitely... impose a DST, ban twitter, allow Chinese electrics, develop a Starlink alternative. When one person has the power to alter elections (massive spending), wars (throttling StarLink), and global stability (gutting USAID), that's too much power; especially when that person is a sociopath.

“And there’s a kind of right winger who thinks this is all hilarious because they, too, punch down at vulnerable people, sometimes while spouting Bible verses on social media quoting a man who commanded his followers to care for the poor, the outcasts, the marginalized.”

Democrats laying the groundwork for real opposition, with Congress asserting budget authority to stand against Trump abuses and rights violations. Will have to overcome cries that not passing Trump's budget is irresponsible. But it's the opposite. And starting now makes that hurdle easier to clear.
NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed. Details in my new piece: newrepublic.com/article/2171...
An absolute predatory fascination with power confirmed over and over again by Trump’s his rapey behaviour going back decades. I almost, but don’t quite, feel sorry for Ivanka. Even if he did nothing to her, his fascination with her ‘type’ is deeply creepy.
NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

This. Way too many Democrats will argue that doing nothing is the key to getting elected in 2028. That is dead wrong.
And, most importantly, thanks to the vital mobilisation of young people. Students took to the streets the day after the first round elections, kickstarting massive movements that saw the largest public demonstrations in Brazil since the days of Diretas Já at the end of the military dictatorship.

People don’t understand why I keep noting that BlueSky is not a bubble, it is a counterpublic. It serves its own organizational function: you can see in realtime in January 2025, on multiple types of social media, shouting that an executive order is instruction to an agency. This one stuck.
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
