Last year’s jack o lantern

Elizabeth Spiers@espiers.bsky.social

The 10 year old designed / drew the pumpkin face and it’s got a grizzled tabloid reporter from the 70s vibe where I imagine it starting every sentence with “listen, kid…” and I feel like it needs a cigar in its mouth.

It’s partially why Mamdani is also so despised: there’s almost a fear that if people see political leaders actually doing something (and quickly!) that people will start to have higher standards.

Elizabeth Spiers@espiers.bsky.social

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

Great column from @espiers.bsky.social. Among other highlights, she reminds us of how delightfully ruthless SPY Magazine was at Skewering corrupt DJT during the ‘80s. I too became a huge SPY fan when I lived in BKLYN in ‘87, while working at the Village Voice. It helped this NorCal girl decode NYC!🌆

This is a column I filed to the NYT but the discourse moved on past it before it could see daylight. The topic won't get stale anytime soon though, so here it is: The Art of Punching Up: espiers.medium.com/the-troublem...

“And there’s a kind of right winger who thinks this is all hilarious because they, too, punch down at vulnerable people, sometimes while spouting Bible verses on social media quoting a man who commanded his followers to care for the poor, the outcasts, the marginalized.”

NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed. Details in my new piece: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

newrepublic.comTrump’s Vile Prosecution of Ilhan Omar Is About to Run Into a WallIf they retake the House, Democrats will have plenty of ways to act against Trump’s corrupt prosecutions. Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin say they’re going to use them.

Very glad to hear that Elon Musk is a stickler for details on contractor – government relationships. Could come in handy later.

Lora Kolodny@lorak.bsky.social

Musk said he restricted Starlink in Ukraine- causing fast moving drones to lose connectivity - and that he had every right to do so because of some terms of service or contract that he didn't show us. (He didn't address suddenly doing this with no warning to Kyiv.) www.cnbc.com/2026/10/24/u...

Any politician who’s willing to throw away one group’s rights is willing to throw away everyone’s rights. It’s that simple. Every single consultant, pundit and candidate who’s shown a willingness to abandon trans rights needs to be shunned from the party forever

BeshearStan@beshearstan.bsky.social

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

I have at this point written literally hundreds of stories about Trump since 2015. I make it a point in the bulk of them to point out he was the lead proponent of the racist birther conspiracy. The mainstream media has all but disappeared this yet it is the main reason he became potus.

Put this under nature of the problem. From an axios piece by Jim Vendehei about the growing multiple risks of cascading crises. You’d say the same about Biden? Not politics? lol

the most moderate, apolitical and non-controversial opinion in Elon Musk is that everything he sells is too good to be true, and will either fall apart and be expensive to fix, or will be clawed back and resold to you for more money

This will absolutely happen and I hope they get the blowback they deserve when they do it

Betsy Humphrey@betsyvt.bsky.social

I'm already speculating that the Sunday morning shows will have a whole lot of pearl-clutching over Obama's rudeness. F* that..

Some consultant is gonna call Obama and reflexively tell him to turn down the heat (possibly a consultant who worked for Obama!) before remembering that he’s not president anymore.

He’s always had the fighter energy we’re seeing from El-Sayed and Ossoff and was always counseled out of deploying it because civility, bipartisanship, etc. He could use it now if he wants to!

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.

Trump: "You know, the first question -- they have a lion, a snake, a giraffe, and a bear. And they say 'which is the snake?' ... by the time you get to number five a lot of people are left out on the road ... I get no credit for it."

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.

Seems like a good time to mention that we had to do layoffs at the Barbed Wire a few months ago because we were already operating on a shoestring budget and promised funding fell through. (Read: donor backed out.)

So if anyone knows any progressives who want to put their money where their mouth is re: funding media outlets that promote democracy and do important reporting in areas dominated by right wing outlets, hit me up!

My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...
