I have tried several times to see this Hudsonian godwit, but until this morning kept missing it. That bill is something. Not the best light but fun nonetheless. #birding #birdphotography

I think my next #birding deep dive is gonna be understanding the subspecies of Savannah sparrow. The variation we get on the east coast is pretty significant. The crisp dark brown and white chest on this bird threw me at first #birdphotography

What is the saying, "dont let a crisis go to waste"? My in laws had a water line bust in their home in maine and they aren't there, so had to drive up at 4:00am to make sure I could get my work done and was able to briefly see a rare gray heron in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. #birding #birdphotography

The gray heron looks like its cousin the great blue heron but without any rufous color a thinner build and bill with a white patch on the shoulder. Clean gray and white neck/ throat. #birding it's a rare visitor to the US

A double crested cormorant was nestled in the tops of the trees while I was tracking a flock of passerines. Surprised me. #birding #birdphotography

Been without a camera for over a month. Finally got out into the field for some #birding. Ruby crowned kinglet, Palm warbler and Easter bluebird.

I took some zoomed in pics of a large raft of surf scoters in San Francisco Bay and caught the back end of a harlequin duck. Nice surprise! #birding

This. It has always been this. A sitting American president did this. And because he did this, he should have been convicted and put behind bars. And the fact that we never held him accountable for these crimes will forever stain this country. And we may never recover from it.👇

First of year Connecticut warbler. Looks like an adult female based on the clean yellow underneath and white eye ring with olive/ brown hood. First time getting a photo of one too thanks to a fellow birder who jumped in since my camera broke. #birding #birdphotography

With my camera on the fritz, I had to Digiscope this beautiful Buff-Breasted Sandpiper working a giant mound of mulch for some lunch at the Clarkstown, NY recycling center. #birding #birdphotography

People are falling for the DSA vs Establishment trap again. Didn’t we learn our lesson in 2016 and 2024? It’s the establishment’s job to build a coalition that can win EVERYWHERE. In some places, that means ultra-progressive. In others, it means establishment. The tent is big enough for all of us.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth, so fav bird captures from August 2026. Hard to choose with trips to Maine, Alabama and Arizona and over 50 lifers! So one from each. Ferruginous Pygmy owl, swallow tailed kite and baby piping plover. Chosen 4 #birding experience not #birdphotography

Gorgeous!

Per @alan678.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay is #Coastal&River, any coastal or river birds. The alt is #Rocky, birds with rocks 🪨. A pair of Blue-footed Boobies perched on black lava rock in Galapagos. #birds #ECK #photography

Working away on my porch and this friendly monarch dropped in to hang for a bit. What a companion for a couple hours of conference calls #birding #butterflies #nature #birdphotography

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

So I guess my best advice is, follow real people who love wildlife & want to protect it. People whose joy shines through. Who share their stories about being out in nature. People who interact with other nature lovers, photographers & artists. They’re way more likely to be showing you the real thing

Concern about generative ai is absolutely everywhere. So I thought I’d do another thread on spotting ai wildlife “photos.” Get down to the specific details of how to tell. So I went to look at a whole bunch of them and my conclusion is: oh shit, they’ve gotten really accurate. 😬 😡

I couldn't get a crisp photograph of this Scott's Oriole for the life of me. It's such a beautiful bird too. Maybe dropping and breaking my camera on this trip was a sign... #birding #birdphotography

I hired guides for a 1.5 of birding to help get on more species. I couldn't recommend Ezekiel Dobson and Nolan Walker with Arizona Birding Guides enough. So young and so damn talented and knowledgeable. It's inspiring. Zeke on Mt Lemmon and Nolan in the Sonoran Desert. #birding #birdphotography

Anna's Hummingbird feeding at Santa Rita Lodge, Madera Canyon, AZ #birding #birdphotography. It's really a special place there. Super nice folks, amazing birds and quaint lodging. Loved every bit of it.

The Rivoli's hummingbird is truly "magnificent". Look at the size difference compared to a broad-billed. And the color variation. The two on the branch are the same bird seconds apart. #birding #birdphotography

First #birding trip to Southeast AZ for monsoon season. What an amazing place. Two of my favorite lifers: a Ferruginous Pygmy owl in the Sonora Desert of Pima County and a a Violet-Crowned hummingbird at the Paton Center in Patagonia. #birdphotography

2.5 days in SE AZ delivered 145 species, 48 new to my year list with 45 lifers. Five-Striped, Rufous Winged & Rufous Crowned sparrows #birding #birdphotography pictured. Unfortunately my camera broke midway through and I lost my shotgun mic so the birding gods giveth & taketh away.

The cyclospora outbreak has reached 13,895 cases across 47 states. The FDA has recalled 1.6 million eggs due to salmonella contamination. Screwworm cases continue to rise. And we’ve just surpassed 2,500 measles cases — breaking 2025’s record. “Make America Healthy Again.”

Hey #birding community. Quick informal survey. Do you use AI chat tools for birding? Y/N If yes, how? Some thoughts... Bird ID, Trip planning, Learning natural history, Keeping lists/data, Strategy, Motivation/coaching, Reflection/journaling, Companionship, Something else? #birdphotography

Auburn's fisheries and allied aquaculture school is one of the best in the world. It includes a 1600 acre property with over 200 ponds including hatcheries and harvest basins. You get a ton of bird species there including these three green herons #birding #birdphotography

Picking out the one Ross's goose and pink footed goose in this massive flock of snow geese (10k+) was quite challenging! We were two hours away when the alert went out and immediately pivoted to chase the PFG #birding #birdphotography

Another memorable chase from earlier in the year. Spent the prior day looking for burrowing owls in the valley only to have this guy surprise me just south of the San Fran airport. He was about 15 ft off the path and as accommodating as it gets. #birding #birdphotography #owls

One of my favorite chases of the year was the bachman's sparrow. It's one of the few rarities where I targeted a habitat where there were no recent lists. In this case recently burned long leaf pine forest in AL. Lo and behold, he was there. #birding #birdphotography

This tufted duck spent a month as my nemesis bird, evading me on 4 trips before finally catching him on this video. He spent weeks visiting a tiny pond on Long Island. #birding #birdphotography

It's been fun revisiting some my chases from around the country. While chasing a Ruff, I came across this Bobolink singing in an Essex County, MA marsh not too far from Plum Island. #birding #birdphotography

Another memorable chase. This time of a henslow's sparrow. This older couple had missed on it and were getting ready to leave and one popped up singing and we were able to get them on some great looks. Lifer for all of us. #birding #birdphotography
