Tired public sociologist focused on disability justice, conservatorships, and service delivery systems. Covid cautious. I love kindness, plants, birding, and happy hour walks with my dog. 📢 Conserve trees, not people! San Diego, CA

Greetings fellow #Newskies & #Dogskies! In an effort to connect here, I'll share pics of my 🧡, "Mia". She is 2 yrs old, and a 60 lb mix of Rottweiler + land shark + princess, and may even be part gremlin! We enjoy birding, sociology, reading, & happy hour walks! Hope to connect with kind people.

People think liberal arts degrees and sociology are useless, but it'd help you avoid this kind of shit.

When sociologists talk about people reaching for strongman fascism over loss of status... this is why.

Interesting.. Here's the Sociological explanation for why MAGA is flipping out over the halftime show. It also explains the white supremacy ideology in general.

The bill will strip close to one trillion dollars from federal Medicaid funding across a decade—an attack expected to cause tens of thousands of preventable deaths each year, disproportionately affecting the disabled community. Disability advocates tell @juliametraux.bsky.social what this means 🧵

Adding to this, I don't think people fully realize that this country has deported many US military veterans. When I was in Tijuana a couple of years ago, the border wall along the beach separating Tijuana from San Diego is full of names of deported vets. Truly shocking to see the magnitude of it.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

Self-deportation isn’t a thing. ICE forced this Hawaiʻi resident to leave the country. He’s lived in the US for nearly 50 years, served in the military, received a Purple Heart for being shot in combat, but is being forced to leave for a drug offense.

It's astonishing how little attention is paid to the quality of the air we breathe, especially in sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes. However, a few pioneers around the world are showing us the way 🔽.

“When the nonviolent resisters use humor…” writes sociologist Majken Jul Sørensen, “Not only is it hard to justify violence. Almost all kinds of reactions, violent or not, make the oppressor look ridiculous.”

Ruth Wilson Gilmore's concept of "organized abandonment" is useful here: the intentional disinvestment and neglect which creates group-level vulnerability to premature death. Organized abandonment kills more people than interpersonal violence, and it's not even close. It's worse.
