The Fox World Series broadcast commercial break just went from the weird "liberals are the new racists" ad to the naked Sydney Sweeney ad and we're one Biberty away from the bad commercial equivalent of a "perfect game."

Big moment this evening for Robert Gasser, with 6 shutout innings for the Brewers in the World Series! But did you know that in high school, he regularly pitched in front of his dad's close friend Vin Diesel???

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

That's just the Arab World, and just the Nobel Prizes. This list doesn't include any of the other prizes or many more Muslims from outside the Arab World (like Iran, Pakistan, etc.) Nor does it include descendants of immigrants born here, in the UK, or outside the Arab World. Shut up, RFK Jr.

I did not know it was humanly possible for anyone to have this many words about Bill Maher. Like Bill Maher doesn’t even have that many words about Bill Maher, and he has an ego that’s roughly the size of the state of Texas!

Bonus fun fact: if San Diego wins by 1 and Gotham loses, they would be tied on goal differential, so San Diego would win the Shield on the second tiebreaker: most total wins. With an SD win and Gotham loss, it would be 18-17 in favor of the Wave.

Jeff Kassouf@jeffkassouf.bsky.social

#NWSL FT: San Diego 2, Boston 2 The Wave stay alive in the Shield race heading into Decision Day and prevent Gotham from clinching, but they are 3 points back with a game to play after conceding a second-half equalizer vs. Boston. Wave need a win + Gotham loss for the Shield.

Wait hold on, I am dumb. If Gotham loses, their goal diff would go down by one from where it is now. SD would win on goal diff.

This moment might have swung the election in Brazil. The younger Bolsonaro made fun of Lula having nine fingers (Lula lost a finger as a teen due to some terrible working conditions & some poor care from doctors.) He fought back and in a country with a large working class, it might have resonated.

I know this isn't the most important story in the world, but apparently the Current are going through with claiming the people watching on a screen next door to CPKC Stadium as being in attendance. I'm not the boss of journos, but I think this is something where media should push back.

I'm not sure how much longer we'll have PTI. They have gone from old to *very* old. And by their own admission, the network has little interest in the show. All of their sister shows—Around the Horn, Highly Questionable and others—have been cancelled. But these 25 years have been a gift.

Here's to a show that has been there in every season of life. A show that invited viewers in to heated but substantive, fact-based sports debate. A show that actively corrected itself. And a show that literally shouted at me. Same time tomorrow, knuckleheads.

I probably won't have my next day job in journalism. PR & comms beckon (although hopefully I can do sports reporting.) But I've grown up and into adulthood with their show. 6-year-old me would argue with my mom that, yes, it's a show for kids! They say "welcome to PTI, boys and girls" every time!

I've seen it through every season of life. After school pickups and tennis lessons as an elementary schooler. After driving back from school while doing homework in high school. At bars in college, in the background of first dates, on office TVs in journalism newsrooms.

Both of them conceded the point. As we walked out of the studio together, a mildly annoyed Wilbon gave me props. And I was also mildly embarrassed correcting these sage old grumps who I grew up watching. But I think we all knew, in real time, that's the kind of moment that sparks a career.

Eight years later, that's *exactly* the kind of moment that stays with me forever. Everyone is equal when it comes to getting the facts right. In a newsroom, you *will* get shouted at just like the pros if you have a take you need to back up, whether you're the intern or editor-in-chief.

I could not believe it. Literally on set standing right in front of the desk, I had the two of them shouting as usual... at me! At one point, Wilbon shouted, to Kornheiser's approval, that NOBODY had ever won Cy Young or MVP on a bad team without a ton of wins. Except I was sure he was wrong.

We briefly stopped the argument to smile for a photo. And then I punched in my little, already outdated iPhone to see if I was right that A-Rod won the MVP in 2003 on a last-place Rangers team. He did.

This was summer 2018, and the guys didn't think that Jacob DeGrom, who had a sub-2 ERA but just a handful of wins, deserved to be the Cy Young because he didn't have wins. As a youngster who thought pitcher wins were meaningless, after the show, I brought it up.

I reached across the table, shook their hands, told them I grew up with the show... and then in a casual, 'c'mon man' kind of way, asked them what the heck they were talkin' about saying DeGrom couldn't win it if he was pitching so well. Still in their seats, they turned their fire to me!

I never worked at PTI. But I did work at ABC News, in the same building where PTI filmed. One day I made some idle chit-chat with a lady in the elevator. Turns out her name was Bonnie Berko, and she's the producer who basically made PTI go. I mentioned liking the show & she invited me to a taping.

So not long before 5:30 on a summer weekday, I ended up sitting in a basement studio, not far behind the camera. It was me & a small group of middle-aged women sitting there watching them do the show in basically real time. It was fun, energetic, and there was a take I found a little too hot...

Since cheek swabs don't work (the doctor who created the test will confirm that for you), that leaves an "anatomical examination" as the only option other than banning girls from sports. If your law requires choosing between an Epstein fantasy or a Taliban policy, it's not a good law.

This has actually been a terrific reminder that I’ve been noodling over: more potential NWSL awards. Some I had in mind: Most Improved, 12th Player/Reserve of the Year, best defensive forward, best sportsmanship on-field. Do you have other awards? Or nominees? Might turn it into a piece!

rowan (woso arc)@thisweekinwoso.bsky.social

All right folks it's time for the Almost The Best XI of the NWSL season. The players who *would* have been in contention for awards except that they were taken away from us for whatever reason -- injury, maternity, transfer, coach's decisions, WAFCON, killer bees, etc

Shoutout to either José Alvarado or the Knicks for making him the only player to be introduced as “from Brooklyn” as opposed to from the school he came out of (Georgia Tech)
