Civil servants should be able to provide the policy analysis we need. This is ridiculous.

from government by consultant to government by consultants using generative AI. decades of degrading government capacity to actually govern has left it open to further degradation through ai hype and perceptions it enables further cost cutting.

I don’t think you can understand the dynamics of the Epstein and Trump and how this much corruption gets suppressed in the digital age without reading Robert Entman’s book, Scandal or Silence, an exploration of the factors that really drive presidential scandal. robertmentman.com/2012/03/24/s...

"But when the team looked at the employees’ actual work output, they found that the developers had completed tasks 20% slower when using AI than when working without it. Researchers were stunned. “No one expected that outcome. We didn’t even really consider a slowdown as a possibility.” 🎁link

I've received an 'exclusive' invite to try Nature's new 'research assistant', which will burn down a forest to provide a 'summary of the paper' I'm reading and I have SUCH exciting news for them, that's called an 'abstract' and the actual authors already wrote it for me, no forest-burning required.

In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

LOL

I think Trump is going to do a Michigan Man of the Year and just invent a fictitious peace prize he won. "I won the Norbiggle Peace Prize, not a lot of people know that. The Norbiggle, people are saying it's even more prestigious than the Nobel, which nobody wants anymore."

I needed to take 3 trips to city hall this year in order to vote - I was not on the voters list despite living in the same house for 18 years. The average person would not take these extra steps. Voter turnout is partially a function of electoral management. Let us assess our processes, St John's.

1. I was not on the voter's list. 2. I called and was told I needed to come in person to register. 3. I went down to register, and then was told to come back when my ballot was ready. 4. The postal strike + work travel meant I could not just vote on election day, and could not mail in my ballot.

Gross. This is shameful.

An actual job ad: “When we refer to ‘women’ we mean those assigned female at birth. . . . Successful candidates will be asked to produce [a] passport or full birth certificate. . . . It is expected that this documentation will be in the female gender.” What a disgrace @newnhamcollege.bsky.social

Sent this to some important teens in my life. I’m sure they’re rolling their eyes but I am delighted. 🤣

Currently writing up a few paragraphs to explain the science of sampling to undergraduates and am reminded of how amazing some folks are at explaining math and probability with such seeming ease. This is no simple feat even if simple random sampling is not that complex.

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars. OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.

I can't believe I need to have an AI policy! I made it pretty short though: Using AI is cheating, yourself mostly. In addition to the environmental blight created by AI, it makes no sense to use it in your intellectual and creative work. Why would you outsource your innate intelligence?
