Today’s #StetSprint starts in 30 minutes at 2 p.m. ET! Get ready for a focused hour of work. How to #StetSprint 1️⃣ Share your goal with us (ex. β€œCopyedit 6 pages of MS”). 2️⃣ Focus on work for 1 hour: No phones, no social media, just working. 3️⃣ In 1 hour, check back in here and tell us how you did!

I realized I had the perfect thing to test @edda.ink: an obscenely complicated family tree. Results were mixed. 1. Once you put a character into the tree and connect them, you can't edit this. I screwed up one branch in particular and had to delete the affected character to fix it.

Auto population/import from character sheets would be a huge benefit as well, as well as the reverse (linked family tree entry to sheet can populate the relationship in the sheet and allow editing for the granular specifics from there) If it exists, I couldn't find it before I ran out of demo time.

Getting these things sorted would be a massive boon to organizing lore on epic fantasy, historical/regency settings, and even urban fantasy series like #Incryptids and #OctoberDaye. The sheets are impressive, but if I needed to sort a family tree specifically, I'd be better off somewhere else.

7. Still no auto-web that visually resembles a classic tree with clean connections that I saw. 8. Ran out of demo time to see whether connecting the sheet to the entry on a family tree changes anything, but I suspect it doesn't. Will confirm when I have demo time again.

It felt pretty intuitive, and I was able to get about 5+ large generations mapped out in 12min. Lack of editing and auto-sorting/pairing options is a big downside though. Other family tree freebies will auto-pop "grandchild/nephew" relationship ties and let you correct mistakes.

2. No way to connect two separate family trees via marriage or adoption. It has to be done on the same tree. 3. No auto-sorting. Spouses don't automatically line up next to each other, children don't automatically fall under parents. Drag and drop to DIY organize. Confusing with this family tree

4. Creating character sheets generates a pseudo-tree! 5. Relationships have to be added manually to the sheet, but pairs the corresponding relationship immediately to the other sheet. 6. Sheet gets much more granular and specific. Spouse or partner? In-law? Step-parent? Rival? Ally?

Because I just saw it on a book blurb, here is a periodic reminder that the "A" in LGBTQIA+ stands for: asexuality aromanticism agender And that "ally" is okay/accepted because many people who aren't safe to come out self ID as ally first. Related: Changing the acronym is sometimes a dog whistle.

It can make writing a book with respect to the queer community hard when there are malicious actors who put a lot of thought into misleading people. This is one thing that an #AuthenticityRead can help catch. A good #SensitivityReader has lived or extensive professional experience.

They're educated on tiny nuances that are meant to be easily missed or overlooked. It's the little details like this that make Cultural Accuracy and Sensitivity Evaluation services a massive benefit to authors, editors, and publishers. Questions? Hit me. #writing #editing #booksky #bookingnow

This isn't speculation. This is openly stated/publicly discussed strategies re "convince them that ace people are (a problem) then convince them trans people are a problem." Same for "queer is a slur." The full slogan states it's a slur against lesbians and originated in exclusionist communities.

Queer history is a LOT. So are the politics. Huge portions of our own community don't always know things like this either, for a lot of very complicated reasons too long for a ("quick") bluesky post. There's a lot of disinfo. It can be really difficult to know what's a dog whistle or propaganda.

Which is why I'm posting about it now. There's nothing else in the book blurb that makes me wary. In fact, the book sounds incredible. But TERFS and radfems target ace communities to indoctrinate people into anti-trans ideology.

1. It's probably cheating if I claim the whole series, right? I almost want to say Grace for the best meet cute disaster of all time ("SO SORRY, ma'am") but the Shane-specific fridge horror checks all the boxes, so I'll run with @tkingfisher.com's Paladin's Faith if I can only pick one for now

I'm still poking around at things (and there's a lot to see), but I don't think I've seen anyone do this quite as efficiently or directly At least not without a subscription or AI features being included

Writing a series? You should not rebuild the world for every book. Edda groups your books into a series and shares the worldbuilding across them, so book two starts where book one left off. #WritingCommunity #amwriting #BookSeries #Worldbuilding #WritersLife #IndieAuthor

This is a big one when it comes to navigating what's "too much" world building in a lot of SFF genres, especially ones like epic fantasy. 1. I think "too much" is unhelpfuly broad. "Too much" leads to "How can it be too much if it's important?" That question creates friction.

Q: Handling backstory when the story has a TON of worldbuilding unfamiliar to readers? A: What's the minimum amount of info that the reader needs to understand the story we're telling up to this point? What's adding necessary context vs. what are you putting in because it sounds cool?

Removing world building details is the assumed fix for "too much world building," but it doesn't address an imbalanced distribution. It doesn't fix interactions or moments that were actually under written. "Minimum necessary" is the kind of precision that targets both and makes cuts less painful.

A lot of times, the fix is to move it, not take it out. So not only do you get to keep your important details, you also give them the best chance for someone else to fall in love with it.

To the author especially, every bit of lore IS important or precious. It is necessary. And they're correct, if only because their knowing this detail helped them create the story. That's not nothing. But without direction, "too much" leads to cutting the wrong things and never addresses the

Real problem. The real problem is distribution. It feels like too much when the details aren't distributed optimally. When more attention is given to explaining the world than to what the characters think and feel and do in a later scene. When the details exceed "minimum necessary for this scene."

Include Meaningful Action Your protagonist should be doing a meaningful actionβ€”something they're doing to reach their goal. Show that they have agency in the story.* *This is a Western storytelling ideaβ€”Craft in the Real World talks about how this is not always true in non-Western storytelling:

Make a promise to the reader. Context: Who is the story about and where does its take place? These basic questions need to be answered in the first chapter for readers to be oriented. Conflict: (I missed what she said on this one lol sorry) Care: What does your character want and why?

Start with a hook: Your first sentence should get readers to ask questions! "I woke up and stretched my arms"β€”boring start because it's not unusual. Don't start with action for the sake of actionβ€”if you start in action, it needs to be tied to the overall story. Don't start with infodumps!

It's true! We'll be sharing more details about this virtual conference that's "A little shorter, but still immensely useful" within the next couple weeks!

Exciting news: The En Dash Conference by @edsguild.bsky.social and @editorsteaclub.bsky.social will be January 22–23, 2027. More info coming soon from both editorsteaclub.org and edsguild.org! #amediting #edibuddies #editorsky #freelanceeditor

I'm not as on top of news of where people are going next or where fans can go as some of my fellow Tapas orphans, but I'm going to continue to share what I know, when I know it. If I can make a difference for even one fan, it's enough reason to keep doing it.

Communities get torn apart by decisions like this. Like the stories don't matter, like the saves and comments are just numbers, not people. Like the connections mean nothing. I know better. The detonation erases revenue, KPI, and stability for creators. The shockwave wounds the fans.

Okay. The very best I can tell, this is how this was formed. There's still something about the first letter that seems off, and I'm completely guessing at the starting point. I can't say this clarified anything for me at all. But maybe someone else can make sense of this?

Weird request. So, I was scrolling on eBay and my eye caught on an item lot of 27 vintage rings. In particular, I focused on a blurred ring in the background. The ring pictured below. Sometimes, as an author, you need to know the story. I kind of thought the year read 1976, the year I was born.

Okay #writingcommunity and #booksky, I have an important question: Do you know HOW to find a sensitivity reader? Follow up: Do you know how to vet them? This goes out to everyone. Writers, editors, publishers, people who've used one, people who aren't sure what the deal is, etc.
