Can you name someone else who hasn't received the Nobel Prize, the Wolf Prize, or the Fields Prize?

Julio César Strassera referencing Dante and Oliver Wendell Holmes in his closing argument for the Trial of the Juntas in 1985:

In 1992 Pat Buchanan delivered a speech calling for "cultural war" against his enemies. It was a diamond bullet and I realized he was talking about people like me. 34 years later, it's the same war, just aimed at different targets. The culture warriors can't be sated, only defeated.

Writer @naomiaklein.bsky.social says the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is part of a much longer project of privatization. "After 50 years of outsourcing and hollowing out of public functions of the state, the very last stage is the outsourcing of thinking, of intelligence itself."

ICE and Border Patrol agents need to face consequences for these abuses. If the Democrats get a trifecta in 2028, they need to pass a law allowing civil lawsuits against individual agents and release the full case files.

On Saturday, US citizen Ricardo Gonzalez was reportedly hit by an unmarked federal vehicle, tased twice by ICE agents and then handcuffed while face down in the gutter screaming that his arm was broken. Read more from @brandonrichardson.bsky.social on the Watchdog. lbwatchdog.com/ice-assaulte...

I'm an American and not the most in tune but it seems to me that Labour never really recovered after losing their traditional bastion of northern England. Instead of retrenching around educated young Londoners, they decided that American style cultural revolution was the future.

Jonathan Cohn @jonathancohn.bsky.social

I've wondered about why the British center-left is so particularly atrocious on trans issues, and I found this to be an interesting thread.

Like I say I am an American and probably totally wrong. But I'm less inclined to think Starmer era anti trans policy is just a sort of British priggishness, when it looks like it's an acceptance of nationalist populism as the spirit of our age.

I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

Imagine an American newspaper publishing this in 2026. Accusing 7 Army officers and 4 civilians of criminal misconduct and ending it "Let them dare, then, to bring me before a court of law and let the enquiry take place in broad daylight!" Ours is a nation of shallow cowards.

In 2002, English writer Rory Steward walked across most of Afghanistan, and wrote a book about it - The Spaces in Between. He describes illiterate people that couldn't read Arabic but would recite the Koran from memory without understanding the words they were reciting.

It turns out Marx was right. Utilitarianism truly is a genius of bourgeois stupidity.

Remember when us phil-tech types said effective altruism was just utilitarianism taken to its worst possible extents? This is what we meant: Real harm for unquantifiable potential benefit. "…'we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology….'"

My father was born in the great depression, lived without a father in an uninsulated schoolhouse in the upper midwest. He joined the army in 1951 and when he got out was able to attend the University of Chicago on the GI Bill despite never graduating high school.

The loss of living memory of the Second World War is absolutely catastrophic

He never forgot how it was he was he was able to get a good education, and from it, a good job. He had a friend when I was young who tried to get him into running. He quit; his feet were messed up. Years later chatting about nothing he said hardly ever got new shoes and his feet were messed up.

Losing the group that lived through the second world war is like losing the groups that fought for civil rights, and for the rights of workers, and the rights of women. Those are disappearing and if people don't fight for them, they will be taken away.

it would be a good opportunity to pick up some n95s if things start to get hairy. They were unobtainable for months in 2020.

This is all hands on deck! Pneumatic plague is airborne and nearly always fatal if untreated. Wiped out 150 million, half of Europe, way back when. Treatable with antibiotics, but we don't have enough antibiotics. Also from a lab in Russia, where they still have weaponized plague. Total nightmare.

The USA Today was not a prestigious paper like NYT or WaPo. Nevertheless they seemed to play things pretty straight while the prestige papers folded. I'm not so sure now.

Nicole Bedera@nbedera.bsky.social

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

All of this would be cleared up rather quickly if we could get Sam Alito together with Isaac Chotiner for an interview.

I suggest the TSA get used to standing all day because in the conservative project chairs are for people of a higher social station.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

TSA says it is removing chairs at document checks in airports, requiring staff to stand for their shift. TSA explained the reason as twofold: to ensure its employees meet its fitness standards and to create an amiable environment for travelers.

I don't like the "Trump take BBQ". Not that they aren't funny, or partially true, but America has seen five decades of conservative denialism about the consequences of the fossil fuel economy. In short cattle are not economic in our increasingly arid west.

The owner of a top BBQ joint in Texas decided to cut brisket, the top-selling item, from the menu rather than institute a $10 markup for customers. The decision was fueled not just by the skyrocketing price of brisket but by inflation.

2/n: Banning diesel exports would *temporarily* provide some price relief for most of the country, but not for New England. Because pipelines don't run that far north, PADD 1A has to import large amounts of diesel, which means it's competing with a (structurally short diesel) Europe for barrels
