All Vesterdomains back in action. If you sent me an email since about 2026/10/20 10:30 PM EDT (i.e. 2026/10/21 2:30 AM UTC), please resend it. Thank you. Vestertopian law requires me to note that "EDT" in the above is more properly known as "ESST", i.e. Eastern Substandard Time. Hail Vestertopia!

All Vesterdomains have been brought down due to the PHPocalypse. If you need to get in touch with me, consider using alternate means.

@joelbaden.bsky.social Hi, I have a question about a question you were asked in one of your videos: A viewer asked you about the name of Moses, suggesting it might mean "son of the unnamed god", as "-moses" was an Egyptian suffix for "son of". Your answer was that we don't know, and you... (1/5)

Could it be that "Moses" (by itself) was just a common(-ish) name for a foundling? Like "son of I dunno", as opposed to the viewer's "son of the unnamed god". I gather that "-moses" was often (or perhaps in our knowledge exclusively?) used for theophoric names, but I also have to imagine... (4/5)

... went on to give several possible meanings. I was a little surprised that the idea that had immediately occurred to me was not mentioned as one of them. I'm certainly not saying it's *right*, but I'm curious as to whether there's any reason it wasn't mentioned (beyond just things like... (2/5)

"lack of time" or "forgot to mention it"). More like a reason why it would necessarily be wrong. My layman's understanding is that the Bible claims he was put in a basket and sent downstream by his mother, and was then found by an Egyptian woman who adopted him as her own and named him Moses. @vscode.dev Just upgraded to 1.140. Lots of stuff in the release notes about new AI features. I'm a paranoid luddite. So, how do I just disable them? And not just the new ones. I do not want this sort of thing running, or even installed on, my computer.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you get rid of the assumption of omniscience, then even if you leave in omnipotence and omnibenevolence, Leibnizian optimism is now compatible with the possibility that we live in the dumbest of all possible worlds.

how is this real life

"Can't hear what the President's saying" has got to be in the running for the title of All-Time Greatest News out of the Mouth of a Newsmax Host, no?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

LMFAO -- Trump is holding an event at the White House right now but there's no audio because the press pool isn't there. The Newsmax host notes that this is an example of Trump's attacks on the press "backfiring just a little bit"

I particularly liked this rather ho-hum summary from the Chippewa Daily Herald, which reads to me kind of like a public notice that someone applied to the town for an exception to be allowed build a fence half an inch taller than the zoning rules otherwise allow:

100 years ago news@100yearsagonews.bsky.social

Sept. 15, 1926: Frank Ansley, a 62-year-old former mayor of Hibbing, Minn., survives being attacked by a timberwolf on his farm when he kicks the predator to death.

Always good to find common ground with those on the other side of the political aisle.

"If Trump is taking America down, if he is going to bury this country, all the good in it and all its prosperity and potential, then he wants his most adoring and loyal retainers with him. He wants his cult locked inside." Good from @aselrod.bsky.social on MAGA as death cult:

Don't remember anything about this guy (not even having heard of him) so before even trying to find out *why* he was arrested, I checked Wikipedia. Got as far as the start of the second sentence, "A member of the Republican Party". While I'm not proud of my gut reaction, I do stand by it: "Good."

I was in a high school play where I sang lead on one song. The chorus (words) went "C, C C, C C C, A, A A, A minor, F, F F, F F F, G, G G, G 7th". I accompanied myself on guitar, which went "C, C C, C C C, A, A A, A minor, *BLARP*, *BLARP* *BLARP*, *BLARP* *BLARP* *BLARP*, G, G G, G 7th" (1/2)

I hereby officially assert: Not to me. At least, as far as I know.

Victor Marx's campaign says its unlimited purchase merch shop selling a meetings with Marx for $1299 is legal because the money doesn't go to the campaign. So where does the money go? The campaign isn't saying.

Just heard of the resignation of Karoline Leavitt. I hereby officially declare that I am willing to become the next White House press secretary. I feel obligated to note that I have some doubt that the President will like the job I will do, but I am available for the job nonetheless.

I've only seen a post saying "Douthat's in the news again" and then a headline saying that he's joining 60 Minutes. I am not going to look into this matter further. Instead, I intend to blissfully continue assuming that this means he's leaving the @nytimes.com

I don't really understand why people in Maine are getting so worked up about this. I'm sure Senator Collins will use all her power of being concerned. Relax.

this is as cool as when ted cruz challenged ron perlman to a fight with jim jordan

Sen. Roger Marshall calls for "the Gulf Coast countries" to "go in and finish the job" in Iran by "sending their ground troops in, if that's what it takes. But it should not be American soldiers who are leading the way."

Biggest crowd ever. The biggest. Biggest! Everybody knows it. BIGGEST! A lot of people think it's "bigest". The only bigger crowds ever were my rallies. Every single one of my rallies had WAY bigger crowds! This crowd right her is the bigest ever. EVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter!

my god

Obviously some sick disturbed Antifa freak vandal used a box cutter to remove the bottoms of the columns of this totally definitely real building

amanda moore 🐢@noturtlesoup17.bsky.social

I finally made it to the Great American State Fair. The columns on this fake building are something to behold.

I dunno; I gotta admit "dude with a box cutter made a 350-foot gash at the bottom of a pool" seems like a pretty incontrovertible hypothesis to me

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

Trump claimed a saboteur armed with a box cutter caused a 350-foot gash in the newly renovated Reflecting Pool. But the manufacturer behind the project says the issue was simply "finish coat separation" and makes no mention of vandalism, sabotage, or criminal activity.
