Pinned Post! Podcast host: "The Bobby Blackwolf Show" about the game industry since 2005 (!!) - recorded live Sundays at 8PM ET/5PM PT on VOGNetwork Twitch Panel moderator: Dragon Con, Southern-Fried Gaming Expo, DreamHack, and other cons I might have read your donation on Games Done Quick...

I probably clicked on it. The You Will TV campaign is the one set of ads I remember vividly from when they aired and I was hopeful they would be true someday. Then they pretty much all came true. The only false statement was that AT&T would be the ones who would bring them to us.

Happy 32nd Birthday The First Web Banner! On October 27, 1994, The AT&T Telecommunications Company placed the first web banner in Internet history on the HotWired magazine website. The first web banner in the world was 476×56 px.

Mass Effect was my ultimate white whale, my all-time dream project. For the last couple years I'd been in discussion w/ BioWare & EA to take on the project & as part of that I wrote close to 20 minutes of music to explore where the franchise can go next, may as well share it!

On Episode 998 of my video game podcast, I'll talk about the PHP Vulnerability that took a lot of the internet by surprise, and how EA's new owners shut down the exact game studio you thought they would. Also, I got the Steam Frame Ergonomic Kit and it should have been included. twitch.tv/VOGNetwork

You would think someone at the FOX NFL broadcast team would have double checked the generative AI football field they used in the background and said "wait a minute that's not right" GenAI doesn't know ball

Welp... Good news: this is a sports doubleheader for me today as I'm also going to a match tonight at the stadium across the street. Bad news: it's Atlanta United so it'll most likely mean I'll be double disappointed today.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

This is another reason why AI losers have gotten into retro decomp/recomp projects. Nobody wants to play AI slop games, so they have to reinforce the value of AI by producing something desirable, which in this case is just repackaging the work of actual talented people.

zagawee@zachisagardner.bsky.social

just wanted to share something i discovered the amount of games released in 2022 compared to this year has increased by 77%. I use 2022 because that marks the last year before AI really took over the internet whats crazy to me is that the amount of games with ZERO REVIEWS has ALMOST TRIPLED. ZERO?

My oral history article about Sam & Max's War Song is free for one week! Check it out if you're a fan of these games, it's a fun conversation between the people who made this song (and many other memorable Sam & Max moments) a reality.

Skunkape@skunkapegames.com

Members of the dev team recently chatted about making the War Song for an oral history article on @designroom.site. It's a subscriber exclusive, but they’ve removed the paywall for one week as part of our 20th anniversary celebration. Read it while you can!

On Episode 997 of my video game podcast, I'll be talking about the canary in the coal mine for game dev communities that's happening in the decompilation scene, and how Epic Games declared that programming is too hard, so they're no longer gonna do it anymore. twitch.tv/VOGNetwork

So I was told by everyone local that Atlanta Dream WNBA Finals tickets would be so easy to get because nobody would go since nObOdY cArEs aBoUt wOmEnS sPoRtS. I forgot to get into the presale and just checked the public onsale. Sold out. Wife and I wanted to go to games 3 and 4.

My take on this is that this is less about AI making it easier and more about the fact that it's no longer a community of people working together to share knowledge. Decompilation was about the journey and understanding, and now it is just about the results and final product and teams aren't needed.

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

A video game reverse engineering community has shut down because many games can now be trivially reverse engineered and decompiled with AI: "The community aspect of decompilation has been broken." www.404media.co/video-game-r...

The original decomp community was working together to really understand how things were done and how things worked, which is at odds with "get product out quickly". With enough token money, anyone can decomp a game and they don't need to know shit about anything or get help from any other person.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Spent some time last night playing classic VR games and experiences that Steam says I hadn't opened since 2016 or 2017 when I got my HTC Vive. Proton Pulse, Redout, Radial-G, The Cubicle. Back when we were all experimenting and excited for what VR could become. Sad it didn't really pan out.

ZeroTransform's other game, Vanguard V, was one of my favorite Oculus DK2 demos. I backed it on Kickstarter and it failed. Sadly, I never got a key for the Early Access version and I don't think I want to pay $15 for a two level demo from 9 years ago... ...man, we had so much potential back then.

le sigh

NEW: Epic Games has delayed its upcoming (not yet announced) Star Wars + Marvel shooter as it pivots to complete AI game development. "No more hand-written code," a director told staff. All art "generated with full AI workflows." Full scoop: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I worked at Blockbuster Video when this rolled out and they gave one employee at each store the modem. I have the Genesis version. Played NBA Jam on it. It still boots up, but the battery died so it basically factory resets every time you turn on the console.

Via the E3 1995 Show Daily (https://archive.gamehistory.org/item/ac3901f6-d3c6-47f5-8a0e-290c46fc0a86), here's a news story about the XBand 'video modem', which allowed Genesis & SNES multiplayer over phone lines. (Yes, it rolled out: no, it wasn't very popular.)

On Episode 996 of my video game podcast, I'll give my early impressions of the Steam Frame VR headset that I very luckily was able to procure, and talk about Lord British's upcoming IP triumph in 2027, and how one of my favorite 90's games is getting a remaster. twitch.tv/VOGNetwork

I loved Wing Commander 3 (and 4) and can't wait to revisit WC3. When Tom Wilson was scheduled to come to Dragon Con and I was working Main Programming, I asked if I could just ask him questions about being Maniac in WC instead of BTTF stuff. I was (rightfully) denied, then he cancelled anyway.

After spending enough time in the speedrun community, you will come to realize that there is no group of people you should trust more as pilots and air traffic controllers than furries

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

Tommy Tuberville: Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community. It's terrifying.

They've been loyal for 8 months and are just helping to sell a children's card game for "fair market value instead of underpriced MSRP" and now they're mad that they're not special. So much so, they literally want to sue Pokemon for destroying their business model of keeping kids away from Pokemon.

Russell Irving@rginteger.bsky.social

I'm not much of a Pokémon person, but my son is & trying to buy him cards at retail prices has been nigh on impossible the last couple of years, and I refuse to pay scalpers for anything. So it warms the cockles of my heart to see so many of them having a full meltdown about the recent set. Enjoy!!

After what seems like a month long break (but it was just a very long two weeks) I'm back with Episode 994 (!?) of my video game podcast to talk about the Steam Frame finally being real, and the latest vibe-coding battleground in hobbyist game dev. (And I'll recap Dragon Con!) twitch.tv/VOGNetwork
