I am extremely impressed by the developments in Czech science over the last years. The #ERC_CZ program was one of the smartest moves in science policy Europe-wide. Great value for money. This budget proposal is a disaster and kills the amazing work done over many years. Spectacular own-goal.

paveltomancak.bsky.social@paveltomancak.bsky.social

Remember me praising the #Czech government for doing one thing right: supporting #research through the #ERC_CZ program, which backs successful but unfunded ERC proposals? No more; the 2027 budget proposal cuts it entirely! Along with 65% reduction in government research funding. #CountryfortheFuture

How are mRNAs linked to molecular motors in mammalian cells? In our new preprint, we show that FXR1/2 are RNA adaptors for the microtubule motor dynein. Our findings have also prompted us to rethink how activating adaptors contribute to motor-based transport (1/n)

21627 applications. Nothing to celebrate here. Impossible to evaluate fairly & safely. Neither the science (too diverse & possibly LLM generated) nor the soft criteria (likely LLM generated). Without an interview stage - a security risk! marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/whats-new/ne...

What does an ovary actually look like as it ages—one oocyte at a time? We mapped >85,000 oocytes in >100 intact mouse ovaries, in 3D, across the reproductive lifespan. And the ovary turned out to be much more organized than we expected. 🧵 1/5 www.nature.com/articles/s43...

And I somehow ended up the only woman on the author list of a paper about ovaries. 😅 Very proud of this team and what we built together - EB. 5/5

The ovarian reserve shrinks >10-fold with age but the fraction of newly activated oocytes stays remarkably constant at ~14%. Oocytes occupy preferred regions of the ovary. Where they are more densely packed, more are activated. 2/5

Mathematical modeling indicated that most oocytes (in the adult ovary) die in the antral stage. Together, our work shows that the ovarian reserve is not simply a stockpile running down with time, but a spatially organized, actively regulated system - with much of its biology to be discovered. 3/5

Delighted to see this published! 🎉 Why do cells invest in such tight control of tubulin synthesis? @ac-almeida.bsky.social shows that even small increases in tubulin levels alter microtubule dynamics and disrupt multicellular architecture and viability. Bravo to the whole team 👏! 👉 rdcu.be/fu8ek

Hot off the press!! 🚨 Our work is now published in #NatureCommunications! We show that keeping tubulin levels in check is key for preserving microtubule dynamics, multicellular architecture and viability. Exactly my thoughts re the "unbiased" QED 1% list- this analysis puts it on firmer footing. One thing not captured here is the prominence of well-established authors; that's what triggered me whether QED was really ranking the science OR influenced by signals assoc'd w/ scientific prominence- EB

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

I wanted to like QED's new 1% preprint ranking. I really did. But the more I looked at the data, the more uncomfortable it made me. Here is my full peer review. open.substack.com/pub/blekhman...

It was amazing to participate in #PeopleinRed fundraiser Gala, as a guest of the mayor of Barcelona! A lovely reminder that science reaches far beyond the lab -- EB

I’ve been wondering about conference norms. When I can’t attend an invited talk, I offer to send my postdoc who led the relevant work; but this is basically never accepted by organisers. When I organize meetings, I’m more than happy for postdocs to step in.
