Our story about short-long cell leaf epidermal patterning is out in @currentbiology.bsky.social now! My highlight is the beautiful imaging and thorough analysis by the incredibly talented @ncyberwitch.bsky.social. Congrats to all involved 🌾 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Our preprint now peer-reviewed and published 🌾🔬🧬 Grasses have a signature short-long leaf epidermal pattern: small stomata & hair cells spaced by long pavement cells, but how is it built? Premitotic BdPL1 sets cell-size asymmetry; postmitotic BdBRX-solo/BdYDA1 enforces fate. doi.org/10.1016/j.cu...

1/ How do cells divide when they're stuck in something squishy? Most of what we know about the cell cycle comes from yeast in liquid or on flat plates, but in nature they live in dough, mucus, soil and tissue. This new paper asks what that does to division. Love this one!

Our latest paper is out in @embojournal.org! Chromatin compaction is a hallmark of apoptosis, but the mechanism & function of this process was unclear. We show apoptotic compaction is required to prevent fragmented DNA from spreading beyond the dying cell, and is driven by histone deacetylation.

How does DNA remain confined to dying cells despite its fragmentation? @mfdspicer.bsky.social @rcollepardo.bsky.social @gerlichlab.bsky.social et al show histone deacetylation compacts apoptotic chromatin, preventing it from entering apoptotic extracellular vesicles link.springer.com/article/10.1...

In preprints – reading a cell in two tenses: the proteome holds the present, the transcriptome points to the future Roshana Thambyrajah discusses a preprint by @mannlab.bsky.social & co, showing that the most complete picture of cellular identity may come from reading RNA and protein together.

How is proliferation modulated in regeneration for tissues to reach their right size? We found that, in zebrafish scales, proliferation is shut down by a moving front of osteoblast maturation. The front's dynamics scale with tissue size, ensuring proper osteoblast amplification. tinyurl.com/5e45twx3
