if you want to listen to me stumble thru applying Stuart Hall’s circuit of communication (“encoding/decoding”) applied to You Can See Everything, skip to ~00:38:18 and watch thru ~01:04:28. be prepared for me to continually call it the circuit of culture, which is a different cool diagram, whoops

Social scientists have lent our names to calls for electoral system change and rule of law, because of the findings of our disciplines. We should do the same for anti-trans ads, which have dubious benefit and demonstrable harm. My latest at GP/BP goodpoliticsbadpolitics.substack.com/p/social-sci...

this question is impossible to answer so i like MMMM as a character, concept, joke, and vehicle for more jokes. as a literary tool he is perfect

yes, very much! i was never into romance novels until i lived in the bay area, and i’d get really intense longings for seasons around the holidays. so i started watching/reading corny christmas rom-coms, and discovered the romance genre had gotten much gayer than i’d realized. and off i went!

Bookish Question of the Day@bookishqotd.bsky.social

Have your reading tastes changed dramatically over the years? #BookishQOTD #booksky

in my 20s, i stuck to my academic interests and SFF or classics. over my 30s, my taste grew broader at the same time i became much more willing to quit a book. i began reading romance and horror, and even a couple pop nonfiction books and lit fic novels. my academic interests exploded, too.

Bookish Question of the Day@bookishqotd.bsky.social

What parts of your reading taste have changed dramatically over your reading life, and what has stayed consistent? #bookishQOTD #booksky

i don’t remember the first book i read, or learning to read. but i’ve always associated reading with safety and pleasure, specifically the ability to control what i pay attention to and/or experience by selecting from a broader range of options than the reality in front of me

But we unify in the right way: not by embracing bad policies in the name of "bipartisanship," or abandoning the most vulnerable among us like the trans community. Powerful love is how we win. Not by returning hate for hate.

i also mean we’re going to fuckin win

🌑@fell.energy

when i say we're going to win what i mean is that you exist, and you exist, and you, and you and you and you and you and you and you and you and you youre you right there being you right now and nobody can stop you

there is more work than can ever be done, but not everyone must do or can do the same work; that is how diversity is a strength

Hillary Clinton had the right response to Trump supporters. Many of them are indeed horrible and terrible people. And many of them are not. Democratic politicians' job is to get the non-evil ones to switch or stay home. It's ok if you don't want that task. I wouldn't ask you. ☮️

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

made this for dinner tonight but with turkey and anelli pasta. delicious fancy spaghetti-os! this is one of my go-to high-effort-night meals. there’s too much moisture in the recipe as written, so the meatballs nearly always fall apart. they turn into a sort of ragu that i like just as well.

i am clean and warm and full, the night is warm enough to keep the window open, my little oil diffuser is pumping out bergamot, and all is very pleasant with the world if not quite “right”

My equality under the law is not a gift that can be gotten for me by a political party to ensure my loyalty. My equality stems from my humanity. All humans are created equal. You can choose not to recognize my humanity, but you don't own it, and you can't give it to me.
