“It makes no sense, it’s $10 billion for 215 [permanent] jobs. That’s $46.5 million per job. That’s insane! Give me $46.5 million and I will employ a lot more than one person with that.” -Chris Benjamin, associate director of energy programs, EAC Article: www.halifaxexaminer.ca/dismantling-...

It has now been confirmed that EverWind's controversial AI data centre megaproject will not have to undergo a proper environmental assessment, despite major concerns about how the project could affect our environment, water and energy costs.

I see a direct line from roughing up the 80-year-old man in Wolfville to evicting Joan Baxter and Jennifer Henderson from the EverWind announcement to vilifying Paul Wonzey. It's all about delegitimizing dissent.

‘A terrifying project,’ but there will be no environmental assessment for EverWind’s hyperscale data centre reported by Joan Baxter @joanbaxter.bsky.social

What ‘procedures’ weren’t followed at EverWind’s data centre announcement?: The ejected reporters respond to MPs Blois and Kelloway by Joan Baxter @joanbaxter.bsky.social and Jennifer Henderson @dartjenhen.bsky.social

This is NOT normal. I cannot think of anything like it in the 40 years I reported. (Including 30 covering NS politics). No Nova Scotia should be ok with this.
Update: Both Joan Baxter and Jennifer Henderson were escorted out of the EverWind press conference by security. Both are older women who present no physical threat to anyone. Both behave as reporters do. But we (the Halifax Examiner) write critically about EverWind.

I’m TERRIBLE at promoting our work and hate the idea of “monetizing”, but honestly, it costs money to do this stuff, so if you support the work, please subscribe www.halifaxexaminer.ca/subscribe/
I subscribe AND I donate a little bit every paycheque. I wish I could do more. The Halifax Examiner does the kind of journalism that actually counts - it doesn't vomit corporate and government talking points onto tied-down citizens like the CBC, CTV, and every other so-called news source in Canada.
“We are not in a position to litigate competing claims” let’s be real, not taking a stand is taking a stand. Disappointed in the reaction from my MP.
MPs Kody Blois and Mike Kelloway have responded to my open letter to them, attached. I've asked Jennifer Henderson and Joan Baxter to respond, and they will later today. In the meanwhile, here are my thoughts.

I just don’t see how the PM is actually doing any real #NationBuilding. He seems to be doing a lot, though, to pad the pockets of the private sector. National institutions & infrastructure matter. So called #FreeEnterprise & unregulated markets are proven failures & the path to #serfdom. #cdnpoli

Back to needing a flashlight to get to the kitchen in the morning. Back to dark until almost 8am. Dark for dog walking before work, dark for kids at the bus stops. Ugh. I know people want this to be the last time change but daylight time would be brutal for Nov-Feb. See you in a month morning light!

I am sensitive to artificial scents (perfumes, cleaning products, etc.) and get almost instant headaches. I would think those in the health care industry would be more aware.
“No scents makes sense” has been around for over 30 years it’s ridiculous this is still a problem. Scent free products are readily available, and once you eliminate the horrible chemical stench from your life you really notice it when someone uses them. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

A reminder as we are in the midst of a peaking respiratory virus season that every school just crammed every student and staff member into one room for a 40min assembly and no one mentioned current public health advice to wear a mask in crowded settings. covid19resources.ca/covid-hazard...
They deny it but it seems in character for the current crop of conservatives to yell & be violent. They lack emotional intelligence, self control. The fact they have turned to shunning & name-calling shows the Conservative Party is an immature & disrespectful workplace. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Periodic reminder that public health in Canada, provincially and Federally, was explicitly told about long COVID in 2020. They knew quite a lot. They received frequent high-quality info. And they said nothing to workers or the public.
I have to get up and start my day now so maybe I’ll continue this later, but in Nov 2022 we found out that PHAC and CADTH (now CDA) had been keeping a few hundred people total across every province and territory in Canada, including CMOHs, informed on LC since JULY 2020.

Most Canadians oppose book bans. Most Canadians want their kids to have access to a wide range of books. Most Canadians trust teachers and librarians to build library collections. The government should not be telling teens what they can and can't read. Now is an important time to speak up.
