There is so much bait-and-switch in Canada’s “digital sovereignty“ (heh) strategy. Bottom line is that building out massive polluting AI data centres to host US tech companies is a form of digital colonialism: they control the tech & the profits, and export the dirtiest, lowest-value part abroad.

So much of Canada’s oil and gas conversation makes NO sense. But WHY is that? Well thanks to a WILD new report from Greenpeace Canada, the network of murky figures muddying these conversations about energy are coming into view:

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

The best time to have made Canada digitally sovereign would have been *before* an American president announced his intention to annex Canada and began explicitly deploying America's tech companies to attack his geopolitical adversaries. The second-best time is *now*. 52/

This week the 4 biggest publicly-traded Canadian oil companies posted $13.3b after-tax profit in the 2nd quarter ($146m per DAY). Like other global oil giants, they are getting rich from the misery caused by Trump's war. My take in today's @thestar.com: thestar.com/business/opi... /2

Canada is being asked to make a $40B bet on the past. We’re told another oil pipeline will bring national unity, economic security & prosperity. We’ve heard this before. You don’t prepare a country for the future by betting billions on the past www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

For those behind a paywall, my OpEd in the Winnipeg Free Press. Why should Canadian taxpayers provide enormous subsidies for Big Oil? A new pipeline to the west coast estimated at $34-43 billion. Expect that to be north of $100 billion when it's built and doomed to be a stranded asset. #PipelineBan

Alberta and Ottawa said any new pipeline would be privately funded. Today that promise was broken: a private company will cover just 10%. Taxpayers will front up tens of billions of dollars. If oil exports are such an economic opportunity for Canada, why won’t companies invest? buff.ly/Ao6yGt3

It’s a national holiday, but I’m working — because Prime Minister Mark Carney made what I’d argue will be one of the most consequential announcements of his time in office yesterday. Canada, under Carney, is abandoning major goals in our fight against the climate crisis. Here's what's going on:
