Beyond the lawsuit issues like the flooding of platforms by AI music remain. We need to be able to filter this content out; the online streaming act should be revived and expanded; platforms should be built and regulated in Canada; and industry concentration needs to be adressed

"The majority of survey responses indicate a clear line between creativity and the type of music production encouraged by a platform like Suno."

We went a little bit longer on the SOCAN and Suno lawsuit for @theconversation.com, with some notes about the larger issues at play with respect to genAI and music in Canada and what sort of solutions we'd like to see: theconversation.com/ai-music-law...

Our public infrastructure in music project is ramping up (@cult_cap on twitter) and we've thus far completed a survey with musicians in Canada. There are lots of findings to share, but one initial result is that 87% of respondents view AI in music negatively: ca.billboard.com/business/tec...

ca.billboard.comUniversity of Alberta Study Finds 87% of Canadian Musicians View Generative AI ‘Negatively’The Western Canadian university surveyed 263 Canadian musicians about their thoughts on AI’s rampant rise and the use of streaming services as an artistic tool.

Some good quotes: "avoiding like the plague," "I would rather it didn't exist," "everything they make is shit," "unfollow venues/artists who use them," "completely disgusts me in every possible way," "ew no," "fuck it"

A lot of this comes from chapter 6 of Music in Orbit, which details the licensing of satellite radio in Canada and what it meant for Canadian music. While re-reading, I found a typo that will haunt me for the rest of my life. 👍 www.ucpress.edu/books/music-...

Pleased to see this out in the world. Perhaps of value for those teaching media industries courses this fall. All efforts made to be current but, of course, there have been two or three further upheavals since this article went through final revisions last month. academic.oup.com/edited-volum...

We're doing a project on public infrastructure for music in Canada and doing a final call for musicians to participate in a survey on musicmaking at this particular moment. If you'd like to do this, please email me at: fauteux@ualberta.ca. Or pls share with others who may be!

It's anonymous, your email will just be added to a private list that sends the survey out. But there is also an option to be interviewed too, which is the last question on the survey.

Tomorrow, the next talk in the Questions About Music series is taking place. I'll be speaking with Dr. Judith Klassen, curator at the Canadian Museum of History, about the challenges of curating popular music. In-person and live streamed at 4pm MT: www.ualberta.ca/en/music/con...

It feels good to finally be fully into the public infrastructure for music project. A survey is being/about to be sent to about 2000 musicians in Canada. If that's you, please consider filling it out, I promise it will be used for good ❤️

I had figured out how to find solid blocks of writing when the kids were pretty young, but, like often home sick and stuff. I'm finding it hard to figure this out for this new phase of after-work and weekend activities. I'm thinking big things like, "maybe a white board?"

To set the record straight, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said today that about 30 per cent, or 1M, Albertans support independence. This is false. The latest IPSOS poll found about 15 per cent support for separation from Canada when those polled were informed about the "real-world consequences."
