I had a great time chatting with @brianlfrye.bsky.social about my forthcoming book, which reminds me, I ought to share that I have a new book coming out! “Let Them Buy Cake” will be released by @oxfordunipress.bsky.social in February. It’s now available for pre-sale. global.oup.com/academic/pro...

I just posted Ipse Dixit #842, featuring @mark-satta.bsky.social of @waynestateclas.bsky.social discussing his new book "Let Them Buy Cake: Gay Weddings and the Coordinated Campaign against Queer Rights." @oxunipress.bsky.social shows.acast.com/ipse-dixit/e...

Unreal. I bought & installed a new electric hot water heater from Home Depot & couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. After a week of pulling my hair out, I realized they wired it wrong at the factory, so I fixed it, but what the hell?!

A victory…no one came to the @cornelluniversity.bsky.social alumni party here in New Orleans. We saw the organizer walk away and she left all the CU tchotchkes behind. Cornell should expect continued disengagement from alumni until there’s greater accountability. #IAmJaneDoe

It’s perfect! I’m going to the big annual Cornell alumni drinking party that every Cornell club has the second Thursday of each October that all the most involved alums go to. I’ve never been, but I’m gonna finally make an appearance this year.

An interesting thing about returning to running in your 50s is that you don’t just wonder how long you’ll keep getting faster, but also when you’ll start getting slower. A little under a 7:30 mile for now anyway.

Indeed. Ironically, when it comes to charitable spending, effective altruists haven’t actually been all that effective. It turns out that altruism is hard to scale.

What I, a relative normie, think "AI Safety" and "effective altruism" should mean: make sure ChatGPT isn't driving kids to suicide and that nonprofits use their money wisely and effectively What it seems to actually mean: a bunch of Berkley doomers in a sex cult think the robot apocalypse is coming

Tickled to see my institution promoting this! 😜

I posted this essay over the weekend. I guess I should submit it for publication, but that’s such a drag & this one isn’t such a good fit for the process. So, as usual, if any law journal wants to publish it, I’ll accept the first offer I receive. 105 downloads already!

Nothing is stopping you from being as clever & creative as you like. You just want to suppress a machine because you fear it will expose your banality & lack of creativity by competing with you.
