I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

As Andy Burnham reopens debate about Britain’s relationship with Europe, thread below on our September report examining public preferences, anxieties and uncertainty about UK-EU relations

Our @sundersays.bsky.social on PM Andy Burnham’s comments to Sunday Times that he wants an ‘honest conversation’ about free movement & future UK-EU relationship

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he wants a more 'honest conversation' about freedom of movement, suggesting it could work better than post-Brexit immigration has. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

I am going to write a piece about France and Britain - reflecting on the discussions in British politics and the media about what the relevance or lessons the disorder and rioting in France have - if any - for Britain. Your thoughts on what is interesting or useful about this topic?

Story in @thetimes.com today on Home Sec defending plans to make it harder for recent arrivals to settle in UK. Thread from our @sundersays.bsky.social on how few ppl could actually settle after 10 or 15 yrs, & how impacts go beyond care sector: could see vets, architects and chefs reqd to leave.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

The Home Office line is incoherent as the care workers would have to leave the country, never mind the sector, by 2030 under the draft proposals withoit a U-turm, since nobody told "15 years" can get to 15 years given vids. How many ministers grasp this or do not remains as clear as mud.

The Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbullah is concerned the govt gets its settlement policy right. The Prime Minister & Home Secretary have both said the initial draft policy published Nov 2025 is now being revised as the govt responds to public consultation. Final decisions tbc

Reminder of this great position available at thinktank British Future. Deadline for applications 2 November.

More from @sundersays.bsky.social on the Reform ‘stop protecting refugees’ proposal and political responses

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Reform and Restore continue to compete in an auction to abolish asylum + make unethical and impossible pledges about the scale of deportations, where both intend to target asylum seekers + refugees with status + non-Europeans with permanent status + migrants on visas on an ugly + impossible scale

Farage announces that Reform would stop protecting refugees for an entire parliamentary term: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Our @sundersays.bsky.social below looks at the data on how this lack of compassion leaves most of the UK public cold

bbc.co.ukReform would suspend asylum system for parliamentary term if in governmentAll asylum applications would be rejected and existing ones voided, with all claimants marked for deportation.
Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

There is 73% support in Britain for the principle of refugee protection - including in the UK - while 20% are opposed to this. The peak of support was 2022 at 80% (largely because the images from Ukraine had more impact than images from the Channel that year, though boats + migration were high)

Free movement as part of a future UK-EU relationship has more support when linked to benefits to trade and opportunities for UK citizens My blog based on new @britishfuture.bsky.social research for @freemovement.bsky.social 👇👇👇

Free Movement@freemovement.bsky.social

🧵 1. Would the UK public accept free movement as part of a closer relationship with the EU? New British Future research suggests support depends on whether it brings benefits to trade and opportunities for UK citizens.

'I am saying that Brexit has caused more harm than good. I think about 6 out of 10 of the public agree with that' says Andy Burnham on Today More a failure than a success 57% More a success thsn a failure 21% New @britishfuture.bsky.social study of what the public think now

British Future@britishfuture.bsky.social

It finds most of the public (57%) sees Brexit as more of a failure than a success, and want closer EU ties – but voters are uncertain about another referendum or accepting free movement.

Some Labour and trade union voices are saying that exempting care workers from the reforms would not go far enough. One solution could be exempting all migrants who are already in the UK from the tougher rules, but restricting their access to benefits for a period after they secure settlement.
