How should we measure democracy in an increasingly contested political environment? I'm putting together a panel on democracy measurement for the #DVPW Annual Conference 2027 in Leipzig. It's an "open panel" and open for submissions: www.dvpw.de/dvpw2027/en/... (search for "Panel 993")!
📢 CfP #dvpw2027@bschlipphak.bsky.social and I organize a panel on “Linking Data to Study Democratic Challenges” at the @dvpw.bsky.social Convention 2027.
We will discuss the opportunities and challenges of linking data for democracy research.
📅 Deadline: Oct 31, 2026

Time for some shameless self-promotion: my new book “Compliance Promotion in the European Union”, co-authored with my dear colleagues and friends Ellen Mastenbroek and Esther Versluis, has just been published by @oxunipress.bsky.social.

Trump is literally waving at imaginary people now. On his way to another hate rally in Kansas, he suddenly stopped and started waving and saluting at people who weren’t there. Yes, this is real. And thank you for that perfect finale zoom-out, Mr. Nice Cameraman.

Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, education, or income are often collected using different survey questions, response options, or coding schemes. As a result, data from different survey studies cannot easily be combined or compared.

Our large-scale study of phone bans just came out in Science. We randomized phone-free classrooms for 16,000+ students across 10 institutions in Odisha, India. Students deposited phones in a box at the start of each class, for a full semester.

Does populist anti-climate rhetoric reduce support for climate policy?
Testing socio-cultural and economic frames through a survey experiment in the 🇬🇧, @dianebolet.bsky.social and co-authors show it is indeed the case.

📢New paper in @thejop.bsky.social on the reciprocal nature of citizens’ support for democratic transgressions.
Together with Hannah Werner & @annakern.bsky.social , we show that when confronted with violations by political opponents, citizens’ support for transgressions by their own side doubles!
Our panel (w/ @gessler.bsky.social) “Text as Data in the Age of Generative AI” asks: How do LLMs compare to dictionaries, supervised classifiers & topic models? Which new research designs become possible, and what do we lose in reproducibility and transparency?
Welt im Umbruch. Politikwissenschaft auch? 🌍 Text-as-data approaches definitely are: LLMs now code, classify and summarize political texts at a scale unimaginable a decade ago, albeit often without the validation standards we built over 25 years. #dvpw2027@dvpw.bsky.social
Ever wondered what attributes are relevant in your conjoint experiment? And what assumptions you need to estimate it?
Asya and I got you covered.
In a new working paper we propose the APNS: the probability that an attribute's level change is necessary and sufficient for the selection of a profile.
Very happy to see our review of what we know about the contestation of IOs out in print.
It was quite impressive to see how much research there is on this topic! And what a privilege to work on figuring out the bigger picture with my two great co-authors @jonastallberg.bsky.social & Michael Zürn.
A new essay by @jonastallberg.bsky.social, @stefwalter.bsky.social and Michael Zürn discusses what we know about the patterns and causes of, and responses to, such contestation, as well as avenues for future research.

Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? My new (first 😱) paper explores why green parties remain uniquely challenged in economic crisis & that the mechanism is not only about sociotropic concerns, but also voters’ pocketbooks 🧵

We – @jonastallberg.bsky.social, Michael Zürn and I – did and therefore set out to take stock of the state of the art.
Our review is out now in @iojournal.bsky.social.

I also find this fascinating: "More broadly, our AI respondents didn’t like to admit to uncertainty. Across all the questions on our three surveys where a 'not sure' option was offered, human panelists were around four times as likely as the AI model to choose it."
AI polls can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes, a new @pewresearch.org study shows. An experimental AI poll found that 97% of Hispanic adults in the US were likely to follow the World Cup. The actual figure – based on human respondents – was 43%. www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
