My elder sister worked in Selfridges many years ago and once Frank Ifield got into the lift with her. Clearly a bit narked that she didn't respond to him, he said to her, "Do you know who I am?" My sister replied, "No. What floor do you work on?"

RIP Wendell Berry. I've thought about this poem. 'Our Real Work', a lot since starting on Confluence with @julietgutch It reminds me of Paul Valéry : “Une difficulté est une lumière. Une difficulté insurmontable est un soleil." : “A difficulty is a light. An insurmountable difficulty is a sun”.

Very grateful to Steve Whitaker at The Yorkshire Times for this look at my poem 'Marky'. The Irish proverb epigraph translates as 'It is often a man's mouth broke his nose'.

Completely agree. What are they on now - the 21st package of sanctions? Death by a thousand bureaucratic cuts. Every day of failure is counted in lost lives.

During russia's attack on Kyiv on June 2, Veronika, a mother of two was killed while running with her children to a shelter. Her sons, aged 2 and 4, were taken to Okhmatdyt children's hospital. The mother did everything she could to save her children. She did not survive. 💔 Source: Suspilne, TSN.

While we are being warned of a possible night attack, I want to turn to Ukrainian poetry. Poems by Ukrainian poet and servicewoman Yaryna Chornohuz will be published in the US by Arrowsmith Press this autumn.

Love this book, and Armitage's is one of the best in it. Geoff Dyer's is great too, where he complains about not being asked to contribute to the book. "I could turn it around quite quickly and would not require a fee."

You definitely need to read Robin Robertson's "Mortification: Writers’ Stories of their Public Shame" with such luminaries as Margaret Atwood, Irvine Welsh, and Julian Barnes. My favourite is poet Simon Armitage's:
