!!! I am a big big fan of @historyworkshop.org.uk so it's a real honour to have them publish this piece on radical history, print culture and walking. With many thanks to brilliant editor @sophie-turbutt.bsky.social and @btwhite.bsky.social for the encouragement 📚

'My favourite thing about these books is the way writers, publishers and events reappear across time.' @kamackinnon reflects on the Glaswegian radical print she has collected, and her experiences sharing it with the public on historical walking tours (@radicalglasgowtour).

Find it just so typical that rather than Scotland's media explore what public ownership of busses means to the public, or how it works outside of Scotland - or even how it works in our own capital city - the amplified central voices are reactionary businessmen.

(Though personally I don't think that the adoption of AI in this and other settings 'may influence decisions far more than policymakers intend'. The whole point is to influence the decisions in exactly the wrong and racist way that policymakers intend, while allowing them plausible deniability.)

📣 We're hiring! An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us as a Senior Research Fellow. If you have a substantial background in protection policy, we'd be keen to hear from you. Deadline is 12 October – find out more about the role and apply here → buff.ly/7gaZjL8

Come to this if you're in Glasgow this evening!

Royal Historical Society@royalhistsoc.org

The day concludes with a Society guest lecture by Dr Meleisa Ono-George (Oxford) on 'Visualizing Difference: Amelia Newsham and the Art of Race-Making' bit.ly/4hGLz0z. Booking for in-person attendance remains open and all are welcome in Glasgow for the lecture and reception to follow #Skystorians

This means that I will definitely not be taking my six-year-old, and therefore not going myself either. £26 to take him to a park we often visit for free, for something that he might not like? Nope.

It is disappointing that the organisers of Round 3 of the UCI World Cup Cyclocross, in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, in December have chosen to charge £26 for anyone over the age of 2. Adult Admission: £31.53 Concession (U16) Admission: £26.03 each Children under 2 years old go free

"So much of AI research now is simply using the products of a handful of companies to claim they can do something. [...] The research is investigating the applications of capital, not expanding our understanding of the world."

New Post: Why I Love AI Next month it'll be twenty years since I went to university, learned to program, and studied AI. I wrote about why I loved it, why I still love it, and why, unfortunately, it no longer exists. www.possibilityspace.org/blog/posts/i...

Old ladies immediately arrested and imprisoned for holding up signs to protest the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians. Far right thug uses what looks like an illegal knife to slash a boat, endangering a life. And here I am many hours later waiting for any kind of police action.

'Published on 22 September in the journal Research Policy, the study explores public attitudes to AI-assisted research, based on a nationally representative survey of nearly 1,500 UK citizens. The government has made a strong push to expand the use of AI in the research process.'

Public support for research falls sharply when it uses AI, study finds. Scepticism over artificial intelligence in taxpayer-funded research “demonstrates fragility” of support within UK. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-i...

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

Four weeks later, I've found one more institution that has announced its award (the British Library, linked at end of thread). Still no announcement from AHRC itself about these large grants as far as I can tell.

Benjamin Thomas White@btwhite.bsky.social

Does anyone have a full list of institutions / consortiums that have received an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Landscape Award from 2027? The AHRC doesn't seem to have published this information. Here are some that I have seen announced, or found when searching ⬇️

A good thread on a thought-provoking article, which offers questions rather than answers.
