French police are forcibly separating asylum seeking families as they try to board small boats. On Saturday, this resulted in a 3-year-old crossing the Channel alone, his mother left behind. Full thread and story below: www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

In Dunkirk we witnessed French police grab and hold an Eritrean woman's children to stop her boarding a small boat. She already had two children and a husband on board. Another woman was held by police while her 3-year-old was on board alone - the boat left with an unaccompanied toddler. Footage:

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

A few weeks ago, two women and a child died trying to reach Britain. Mohammed Abdulrahman, from Somalia, tried to save one of their lives, but could not. He told me the story while holding the pendant he made from the tag of an abandoned bag, left behind in the boat he was rescued from.

There will be fewer stories written like this, I think, because far-right intrusion into the camps has caused fear & distrust that makes reporting near impossible. I had to empty my pockets to show I wasn't secretly recording. My colleague Jack had to take off his glasses to show they weren't Meta.

A lot of the abuse of RNLI crews asks why they are involved at all. This case explains it well: they have specialist rescue skills which Border Force do not, and sometimes those are needed urgently.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Absolutely insane story about the arrest of August Hanning, former head of German intelligence agency BND Added gimmick is that investigators only found out because Hanning is accused of involvement in another absolutely insane story of a German millionaire trying to abduct her own children

Marcel Dirsus@marceldirsus.com

The accusations are pretty crazy. According to media reports, the former spy chief paid his former chief of staff (who stayed at the BND until this year) to receive classified information after he left the agency. That's already a big problem, but it gets worse. www.tagesschau.de/investigativ...

Great thread to read if you respond to every paywall like someone has shot you in the chest

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

Let me say a couple words about paywalls. They’re annoying. I feel that (as a news consumer) and know that (as a news publisher). But asking for your email, either to read an article or even to access a gift link (someone said this happened to them a a Times gift link a moment ago) isn’t some …

Early release latest: a man was released from Wandsworth, outside of which British Transport Police immediately arrested him for bike thefts he was wanted on from June and August.

It's not entirely clear why BTP didn't just go in and rearrest him while he was sitting in the nick, saving everyone the resources of freeing him. But there we are.

The five men arrested over a potential terror plot near RAF Fairford are being released on police bail, says head of Counter Terrorism Policing, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor 👀

Daniel Thomas/Tommo has been charged, with a single count of criminal damage, plus a fresh charge under Regulation of Investigatory Powers for failing to provide his phone pin. He will appear in Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

If you're just coming to this, here's my in-depth piece on what happened in the Channel this week: a 40-hour small boat crossing, and a game of cat-and-mouse between Border Force and anti-migrant protesters. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Hampshire police say man was arrested on suspicion of destroying ships or endangering their safety under the Aviation & Maritime Security Act 1990, criminal damage, criminal damage with intent to endanger life, & conduct endangering ships, structures or individuals under Merchant Shipping Act 1995

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

This is a particularly baffling line of questioning given that we know exactly where the empty, used dinghies go: they are either destroyed, or in some cases held by the Home Office in an evidence facility near Dover. You can go there and see them through the fence. There's no secret here.
