Also sometimes you would have to stop and ask for directions, or get someone to write directions for you on a napkin to get to your next place. Navigating the world used to involve more human interaction. Technology is lonely

Benjamin Tausig@burrata.bsky.social

GPS is probably the single clearest parallel to what AI is doing to human knowledge now. Before GPS, you would memorize routes (as well as an ability to improvise when needed), which allowed you to drive intuitively most of the time. Driving was sort of fun and definitely easier as a result.

in gta vi there's going to be a mission where you do the ice bucket challenge with salt bae, blake bortles and bobby jindal. look when your release cycle is 13 years long this is just how it's gonna turn out

I think about this all the time. When a train is crowded it still goes the same speed, but every single driver on a road decreases the efficiency and speed of car travel. There’s a reason car commercials show cars on completely empty roads. Using public transit teaches the benefit of community

Matt Weiner@mattweiner19.bsky.social

car ideology, and I am totally serious about this, is the valorization of individual desire over the public. The fight in the war of all against all. In this way it is totally consistent for the car-brained to always be mad at the other car people who are getting in their way.

Wow, I guess they got a big injection of series B funding, time to enjoy the good times before they get bought by private equity and all those investors cash out. [puts finger to earpiece] hold on I’m being told this is some … other business model??

A couple of weeks ago they said breadsticks were getting married, are you going to do anything about that

This comic brought up a core memory of driving somewhere with my pastor as a kid, seeing Bruce Hornsby CDs in his car, and having him tell me that Bruce Hornsby was “sort of a Canadian Bruce Springsteen” which is a pretty random core memory, especially because Bruce Hornsby is from Virginia

This is mainline evangelical belief, yes - not stopping at the founding fathers, either, but reaching all the way back to the apostles. www.crossway.org/articles/doe...

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

I think a lot of modern evangelicals imagine that the fact that most of the Framers were in some sense “Christian” implies that they shared the modern evangelical’s worldview wholesale, a lot of which didn’t really even exist at the time.

Where there were three sets of footprints, it was then that the Grink was there

David_j_roth@davidjroth.bsky.social

Yes, the Grink was there. I'm getting to that. He was on that island with me. And I wouldn't be alive to tell my story without him.

I was in Pensacola recently and walked past the Vietnam memorial there, which is now accompanied with a bunch of other memorials of different wars. The Revolutionary Mar memorial there (¯\_(ツ)_/¯) is emblazoned with this goofball-ass quote attributed to no one that feels more clarifying every day.

To help you out because it took me a few tries: it’s attempting to say that you’re a sucker for hammering a sword into a plowshare because you’ll just get owned by other people with swords. Very cool stuff, very normal

A good chunk of the right has absolutely not advanced past thinking it’s dumb that “sex” and “gender” are separate form fields and as such see anything like that as being ideologically threatening; it’s just easier to control kids than adults

Mark Joseph Stern@mjsdc.bsky.social

A disturbing and hypocritical ruling on so many levels. Especially the due process holding. The court JUST said there’s no deeply rooted right for women to control their own bodies. But there is a deeply rooted right for parents to know if their kids question their gender at school? Come on.

Made my teenager pause playing Portal 2 with his friends in order to let him know that the best Portal 2 player is Plake Portles and now I’m being yelled at

[hits buzzer] is it because you keep helping build visibility and normalizing it by writing stories like this

This is just pushing the regular rules at Christian colleges out to people who wouldn’t send their kids to Christian colleges

Zachary Levenson@grundrza.bsky.social

Yesterday, those who teach Intro to Sociology at Florida colleges (as opposed to universities) received a ready-made curriculum from the state and were ordered to teach it. Yes, you read that correctly. The *state* is enforcing a curriculum on college profs, complete w/ the following restrictions:

This tactic is really worth spending some time thinking about. It demonstrates a contempt for both the people they’re abducting and the communities they’re abducting them from which isn’t reformable or salvageable. It’s a contempt for the idea of law itself. They all have to go to jail.

ICE's decision to just leave cars abandoned in the roads is one of those dystopian things that makes you recoil in shock when you encounter it.

Are carbon offsets for LLMs a thing yet? Certifying that a percentage of cost goes back into an art school somewhere or something

This part is REALLY insidious, there is not a functioning commercially viable LLM out there that is not trained on Laion, a data set that scraped the entirety of reddit, artstation and a thousand other places. "Ethically trained LLMs" are a total fiction/scam

In our conservative estimate, 41 percent of Grok’s images — or 1.8 million — were sexualized depictions of women. Separately, CCDH analyzed how many were sexualized images across genders and ages. Their findings: an estimated 3 million images, including more than 23,000 of children.
