What a sobering thought: "...a top official of another national fraternity privately boasted that he could get his “friends” inside the campus police force to brush aside alleged misconduct from his chapter’s members" #Cornell #Cornell7 tinyurl.com/34d4trby

"We all know his actual reasons for this are a grubby attempt to win a few more votes in the midterms by trying to get oil prices down.” I don't "know" this. I suspect many things but I doubt Trump's motivation is that straightforward.

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

Humiliating and dangerous: Trump has now finally just made America an ally of the Kremlin and is aiding Putin in his war against an American friend and partner. Shameful betrayal of a US friend, and pathetic submission to a US enemy. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In 2029 we may all come to appreciate just how lucky we were Trump was such a corrupt person. A man more dedicated to an authoritarian takeover of the US above all other things might have easily succeeded. But for Trump greed, applause and servility from blondes "trumps" his quest for power.

It is astonishingly blind to have been able to imagine 30 live ins along with 30 other brothers could throw parties with free flowing booze and drugs to 100s of 18-22 year olds and think there weren't rapes. What a scary place to end up drunk at 2am. I really was blind.

No they haven't. Your unawareness and lack of witness to a problem doesn't mean the problem didn't exist. Women have been raped and assaulted with impunity forever. Nothing has gotten worse or better.

I left when they opted to not publish the Kamala Harris endorsement and haven't looked back save to marvel at the speed with which Bezos has destroyed the paper. Then Trump said, "hold my beer" and pointed at the Kennedy Center. bsky.app/profile/cape...

I look at Bush's painting and my mind flashes to, "I looked the man in the eye. I found him very straightforward and trustworthy – I was able to get a sense of his soul." He's had 25 years to contemplate .... Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut.

A story that captures much of what ails America. Demonize one of the more successful scientific advances in health - EVER. Convince people to avoid these life saving techniques. BET on the number of those lethally affected among "the great unwashed."

#EconSky It's tragic to be daily reminded that the "net present value" of Kant's Theory of Human Dignity has been set at zero rather than infinity as he argued. When everything is for sale, human life is cheap indeed.

#EconSky A $1 Gold coin so perfectly captures the essential quality of this con man - FAKE. I bet, once he vacates our White House, we will discover most of the "gold" on the walls is equally base.

The US Mint will begin striking a $1 gold coin featuring President Trump, announces Treasury Secretary Bessent.

#econSky "Remember that time in 2025 we voted to deprive health care to millions of families and food to millions of needy children?"

Sen. Adam Schiff@schiff.senate.gov

What I’ll remember most about Senator Graham was his sense of humor and how he deployed it to move his policy positions forward. Though we did not often agree, Senator Graham was never disagreeable.

A bit of a stretch on your point but for a fun trip down memory lane (and kind of a starting point for market worship) here's a reminder of Greenspan as Ayn Rand acotlye in 1974. Ah the good old days when philosophy (or the lack thereof) matterred. newrepublic.com/article/9149...

THIS is part of the coming singularity - not when computers gain sentience - but rather when every person has easy access to the information guiding policy.

#EconSky Collateral Damage of Regime Change gone wrong. What if the IRGC is just as willing to risk great damage as #Netanyahu and #Trump apparently are.

Institute for the Study of War@thestudyofwar.bsky.social

NEW: The IRGC appears to be controlling Iranian decision-making instead of Iranian political officials who are engaging with the United States in negotiations, particularly Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi. (1/7)

#WW3 #Trump has ordered ALL traffic going through the Straits of Hormuz blocked and the interdiction of toll payers. I presume he means the Chinese and Indian vessels that have been given free passage recently. Silly me. Out of practice on the hiding under my desk nuclear war drills.

Wolff is one of many people who could have spoken up sooner and louder but did not. Not only because he too prefers to use phrases like "models" or "women of indeterminate age" instead of "children" when referring to Epstein's victims but also because he is always out for a $.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

I don't think Wolff is the primary target of Melania's ire, but he is one target and may limit Melania's ability to respond to Amanda Ungaro.

My new masterpiece: vibe-coded chart showing the collapse of the New Deal financial order and rise of Wall Street, by flow of deposits from small to big banks. From 1990 to 2024 NYC banks more than double their deposit share. Small banks and thrifts go from more than half of deposits to <20%.

So much evil has emerged from the Calvinist doctrine of "the elect" - not that Franklin has likely given the doctrine much thought.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump just posted a letter from Franklin Graham assuring him that says "you commented to the media that you might not be heaven bound. Maybe you responded in jest, but it is an important issue to know for certain that your soul is secure and will spend eternity in the presence of God."

#Media #Oligarchy And how was this accomplished? The media was skeptical of Harris and credulous of the known liar, #Trump. All so the very rich could pay less in taxes. It was all so very obvious. youtu.be/8Ev7UkQLicM?...

As with climate change have we gone too far past a tipping point in this matter? We are led by a man who doesn't read, doesn't reflect, never self examines .. and it shows.

You know JD. After reading Hillbilly Elegy all I have to say is: "children all over the world had it so much harder than you did, so shut up your moaning already."

JD Vance offers some cold comfort: "As much as we've gotta focus on gas prices down, the reality is overseas they're feeling it far worse than we do"
