It's paper day! *with a typo in the title*

In this work, we conducted a small spectroscopy survey of 32 FGK stars that all host brown dwarf companions. This host star sample includes 14 brown dwarf companions that have already obtained or incoming JWST data.
I'm packing up orders this week and responding to commission requests!
Heads up there are a couple yarn bowl spots left, here's some inspo 💫

Weather forecast: cloudy! Using the James Webb Space Telescope, Steward Observatory astronomer @bemiles.bsky.social watched WISE 0855, the coldest known brown dwarf, and tracked water clouds moving and changing over time: bit.ly/47VN9Hm
We have a new minigrants program for early-career astronomers for professional expenses (e.g., travel, grad app fees) that can't be covered through other funds. The deadline is Oct 9! The app asks professional goals, description of financial need, & an itemized list of expenses. Please share! 🔭
If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢
What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵

#NASARoman activated the Wide Field Instrument—a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will allow it to explore wide swaths of the cosmos quickly. New Yorkers should know whether the apartment they’re looking at is real.
That’s why we’re working to require apartment listings to clearly disclose when images and videos have been generated by AI.
Finding a home in New York is hard enough without artificially generating more problems.
This morning's launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the Kennedy Space Center was amazing!
Roman is now on a million-mile journey to Lagrange point 2, where it will soon reveal the universe’s darkest secrets: https://go.nasa.gov/4qIa69I#NASARoman 🔭

Yesterday was the last day of the 8th Other Worlds Laboratory exoplanet summer program at UC Santa Cruz, which brought 70 researchers to campus for stays of 1-3 weeks to build and foster research collaborations. As is customary, the last activity is the Monterey Bay sail!!
NSF just announced its GRFP solicitation due in October - deadline varies by field:

Now for the bad news...
* NSF estimates they will issue 1,500 awards, down from 2,500+ last year.
* NSF removed STEM Education and Learning Research as a Major Field.

Had an amazing time at Spectroscopy Summer Camp 🏕️ in Yosemite this week. Met so many awesome folks doing spectroscopy and learned so much! Truly a special conference that I’ll never forget.
Hi everyone! I just wanted to share a new paper that we have accepted in ApJ where we constrain the amount of energy required to reproduce the T inversion on the Y dwarf W1935. The manuscript is on arXiv and you can check it out here: url.usb.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/yFVvC7Dqom...
So incredibly proud of my student Citlali Alcala who presented her work as a LAMAT fellow this Summer. We worked on a Spitzer variability project and I had THE best time working with her. Looking forward to many good things in store for her!
Commissions open tomorrow!
But how do I even order one!? You ask

My heart is so full! The “Charting Substellar Worlds” conference was a great success. Amazing science talks and community building. Conference organizing was so stressful, but so worth it in the end. Along with talks and we had s’mores, karaoke, and even some folks surfing 🏄🏾♂️.
Learned so much about science conference organizing and it was great to have folks from solar system science to various aspects of brown dwarf science!
As a graduation present, I give my PhD students posters based on their research. I have a few examples shown here (Dr. Pa Chia Thao and Dr. Reilly Milburn).
