Fun to see this great podcast about old gaming magazines finally cover an issue I worked on, pretty much smack dab in the middle of my OPM tenure. I can't listen to it all right now, but I'll offer some commentary along the way as I get through it. 🧵

It's FunFactor FUUUUUUUUUUESDAY! Come for the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, stay for games we missed out on and the 5 star review of Sly Cooper, then tag along for the afterparty with, uh, @scalzi.com?? It's Official PlayStation Magazine #62!

Now they’re pointing out the calendar’s not just games and acting perplexed about that. I get that, but the direction of the mag once it changed formats in 2000 was to be a lifestyle mag anchored by games. (Maxim and FHM were HUGE at the time.) And otherwise, there’s only action on Tuesdays. 😀

And now I’m honestly disappointed at the cursory mention of one of my favorite features I wrote. About superhero games. Go figure. 😀 There’s actually a lot of fun stuff to reflect upon here, like all the games that never came out—most notably Batman: Dark Tomorrow.

My favorite trivia bit from that era regarding GTA3: Rockstar specifically asked journalists not to abbreviate it like that. The reason? Brand confusion with its contemporary game with a bigger hype train -- Gran Turismo 3.

Just to clarify that last DMC statement a bit, I still think it would have made an amazing cover -- it's one of the very few games I awarded a 5 out of 5. But what's close to objectively the most revolutionary game of this millennium was ultimately the better cover choice. I can't dispute that.

A little more on our GTA3 "inside scoop." I really don't recall us getting any "GTA3 is gonna be huge" hype beyond Rockstar itself. Everyone could see it was something special. But would it sell magazines? I remember @milkman.bsky.social especially evangelizing it for EGM. Maybe pushed for a cover?

I'm a little disappointed they didn't recognize that among the "TV shows" referred to in Zoe's bio was The Electric Playground. She was probably best known publicly (at least in my eyes) for her field work there.

They question @jwhdavison.bsky.social's column here -- something about OPM probably knowing more than the other guys about GTA3's potential. Nah. We saw it a lot, yeah, but usually in the presence of other journalists at the time. I personally pushed hard for DMC, but that didn't happen. (Good!)

One early note to get things started: The guys recognize that Clish McLaver, our rumor columnist, wasn't a real person. They also speculate the name comes from clishmaclaver, a Scottish term for gossip. Yep! I still remember @jwhdavison.bsky.social discovering the word in a thesaurus.

I think one of my all-time gamer achievements—though I didn’t realize it at the time—was beating Castlevania III with all 4 endings. I either didn’t notice or totally forgot that at least one of those endings misspells the hero’s last name.

I lasted about 1 Zacharia at Walgreens. Which, near a college campus in the late ‘90s, basically meant cigarette dealer. It’s the only reason I know there are “hard packs” and “soft packs.” Seemed really important to certain customers. Still don’t really get why.

I had no idea how much death-defiance was behind the "no CJ tonight" in this 9/21 @p1podcast.com post. If you know Chris Johnston/@superpac.bsky.social at all -- personally, as an EGM reader, etc.-- you HAVE to listen to the latest episode. Chris, I'm so glad you're OK. What a harrowing experience.

Change of change of plans. Stewy’s gonna do an episode after all. No CJ tonight. Enjoy!

I grew up rooting for—and wanting to go to—the University of Texas. Instead, I went to the University of Tennessee. And I've been a proud Vol ever since. Today, my two UTs face off for the first time in my life. Not a bad way to spend the last day of my 40s. GO VOLS!!!

You know you’re a retro gamer when the tiny background rainbow that kinda-sorta looks like the LJN logo is what catches your eye in a train station ad.

My favorite game on my first console. Didn’t know it had a commercial! The ad doesn’t convey the actual sense of fear the game had—incredible sound design given its system restraints. You couldn’t see what was ahead of you till you got there. Limited ammo. Survival horror, really.

I played Castlevania on the Sharp X68000 and “glorious” really undersells it. I didn’t know music from early ‘90s gaming could sound so good. I have no idea what its “bit” equivalent would be, but the graphics looked better than SNES to me. Wish I had had more time with it. So good.
