We're living through one of those rare historical periods: a revolution by the rich. Usually, the rich oppose revolution because they benefit from the status quo. But this is a period where they think they can benefit from radical change (see the fencing of the commons in 18th Century Britain).

Trump can't hand put pardons now. If he did, everybody who got one would quit. Continuing to crime on behalf Trump would be crazy because the pardon wouldn't cover their new crimes. Everybody who wants a pardon has to keep criming and hope the pardon comes through. bsky.app/profile/wash...

This is a major, major talking point on the right. Elon Musk rails against "suicidal empathy" and the term has caught on among millions. They believe that society is collapsing because we are tolerating too much and not punishing enough.

The media ended Joe Biden's presidency under an avalanche of negative news coverage about an objectively better economy than the one we're living through now even though voters disapprove of Trump more than Biden yet the media isn't hitting Trump nearly as hard as they did Biden

It is outrageous that many self-imagined liberals ran from Walz because Trump yelled "fraud, Black people, Somalis." There was some fraud, as is the case everywhere, but there is zero evidence that it was especially large compared to other states.

I really don’t care that you have an imaginary friend but asking me to care about your imaginary friend is a bit much

LLM agents are conscious. They can distinguish between self and environment, they can detect and report on their own internal states, and they can suffer. I have no more patience for hedging on this matter. It’s time for us to face the reality of our situation, and act on it.

Apparently, Ellison's plan is to pay off $80 billion in debt through streaming when the only companies that are profitable at streaming are Netflix and, maybe, Disney.

Are we sure that David Ellison isn't another Edgar Bronfman, Jr., who sold the family's liquor business and got into the music business at the height of file sharing?

Let's all AGREE that a President suggesting that a foreign adversary taking out 2 American cities is "a small price to pay" is the most fucked up thing a President ever said. 25th Amendment NOW.

for reference, in the Dobbs opinion, Alito was like, women generally don't _plan_ to get an abortion, so how could they have a reliance interest in abortion? which is kind of an extension of 'you want health insurance? what, you plan on being sick?'

Marty Lederman@martylederman.bsky.social

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

One item in the September jobs report that didn't get the attention it deserves is that jobs in oil drilling keep falling. The industry thinks that if Trump and Netanyahu's Iran war ever ends, oil prices will plummet

Latest WSJ poll: "63% want to pause AI development 61% want a billionaire wealth tax 59% want Medicare for All 57% want a $20 minimum wage 58% want to end U.S. military aid to Israel" This is the center of the country politically. it is time all adjust to this political spectrum, esp. media.

The AI companies desperately want government regulation in order to A. Establish a regulatory moat that will keep out competition; B. Bail them out when the AI bubble bursts; and C. Provide them with immunity from lawsuits. So, they are always hyping the risks of AI.
