‘Not like us Irish American bog people, we’ve given the world so much’

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Nobody could do smug prick who is still just a bit charming quite like him.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Skerritt, a durable character actor with roles in 'Picket Fences,' 'Alien' and 'Top Gun,' dies.

Conservative guys talking about the classical music they love never get even remotely away from the Classic FM top ten. Wow, really, you like Variations on a theme by Thomas Tallis? Bro, you are so profound!

The surreal city on the moon in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen was an improvised cost-cutting measure, after budget overruns and strikes forced Terry Gilliam to scrap his original idea. They then printed the designs for the models they were going to build and used them this way instead.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

One of our charming, nosy old lady volunteers at the library has often mentioned seeing Gladwell write at the local coffeeshop, and how shy he is. I can only imagine he came to the conclusion we need more cops after getting harangued once again about coming to talk to their the book club.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:

If you ever felt like telling Gladwell what you think of his writing, that coffee shop is Morning Bird in Kinderhook. He’s also often to be found at the Cannonball Factory in Hudson.

something that occurred to me is, everyone knows it’s possible to become a musician with work and practice. but you can’t work on and practice music while staring slackjawed at your phone. the real promise of generative AI is the ability to ‘make’ ‘art’ without reducing your slackjawed scroll time

Last week above the city of Rhenen in The Netherlands. I had been wanting to photograph this church tower with these kinds of conditions for years, and I finally managed to do so. What a morning.

A castle, obviously. I’d go full Jeremy Irons.

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

These guys have gotten so boring, at least propose a global AI-dictator based on the brains of all living billionaires or something.

Gil Durán@gilduran.com

“Democracy has been hailed as, like, the holy grail for the last couple hundred years, but democracies are inefficient,” said the crypto billionaire. “If you get a benevolent dictator, it’s actually extremely efficient." Hmm, where have I heard this before? www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/b...

Young Conan: child of the wheel. Gave myself a break for some fun drawing, and had Basil Poledouris’ Conan score on at the gym all week, so this was inevitable.

Prior to Trump (and memory-holed), Hastert was once the highest-ranking example of a central tenet of conservative thought and governance, supported by both GOP electeds and the GOP electorate: Children should be abused by men, and politics should be conducted to make it easier for men to do so.

Dennis Hastert — the former House speaker who was later sentenced to prison time over hush money payments made to cover up sexual abuse of teen boys — has died at age 84.

We're not suffering a breakdown of the social fabric because we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements with each other; we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements because some people are trying to deliberately rend the social fabric.

A not insignificant reason for the global resurgence of fascism is that there is a sizeable segment of the population who are just arseholes.

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

Doodled some pumpkins while leading toddler art class at the library this morning, but nothing I’ve painted really compares to this girl’s accidental bird in flight.

Feels like complaining water is wet, but this looks so deeply unmagical. Animation has the power to go beyond literal depiction, to engage your imagination. This however looks as staid and prosaic as videogame animation.

From my limited perspective in picture books, there has been a wonderful increase in diversity (in styles and voices) over the past few years. But at the same time I think it’s become harder to maintain a career over the long run.

Still, it's extremely difficult to predict how tech will interact with arts businesses Take US novel sales, which had been declining for decades up to 2020. Would anyone have anticipated that short-form video apps like TikTok would reverse this trend and send book sales soaring?

He’s going to just shoot the whole thing as a stageplay at the Globe theater, with period accurate pronunciation, and a period accurate comely boy as Juliet.

I mean look at this, how is this not Rivendell?

Chuck Groenink@cgroenink.bsky.social

My idea of what Rivendell should look like is less inspired by Tolkien’s own drawings, and more a combination of Romanesque (revival) architecture, Greek Orthodox mountain monasteries, and Finnish National Romantic architecture.
