A little over six months in, it's time to recount some @theredoubt.net Ws...

I’d call this hypocrisy, but I’ve seen no evidence that Marco Rubio actually believes in democracy. Protests in Cuba are good, but in Venezuela they are bad — and it has nothing to do with free and fair elections.

Daniel Drezner@dandrezner.bsky.social

Where we are a a country: the Secretary of State waning a Nobel Peace Prize winner not to peaceably assemble because that won’t lead to democracy. www.axios.com/2026/10/27/r...

When protests broke out in Colombia a few years back, against the country’s right-wing president, Rubio, posting from DC, suggested that those demonstrating were “terrorists.” Again, the support or opposition has nothing to do with democracy. www.businessinsider.com/colombia-cub...

businessinsider.comColombia, Cuba, and the defiant hypocrisy of Marco RubioBoth countries have seen popular protests suppressed with violence. But the US senator from Florida, like others, has treated them very differently.

I can't believe my Heritage Foundation-brokered meeting at the White House on the eve of an election was exploited for political purposes!

I worked as a host at The Cheesecake Factory in the King of Prussia mall. Main memories: 1) You weren't allowed to say "no" (you had to say, "I'm so sorry"), and 2) You _definitely_ weren't allowed to say the thing that buzzes when your table is ready would "vibrate."

Only thing is, if you think elected Republicans are racist just wait until you meet their voters.

Max Berger@maxberger.bsky.social

It’s never been more clear that racism is a scam perpetrated by wealthy elites to convince working people to blame someone other than the wealthy elite.

Post from GOP nominee for Florida state House seat, calling for “Remigration” (ethnic cleansing) & touting protests against “Sharia.” He was active w/ white supremacist group; marched at infamous Nazi rally in Charlottesville; advocated executing LGBTQ people No pushback from GOP. Expected to win

A reminder that this war starts and stops at the discretion of Donald Trump.

Avishay BSG (Ben-Sasson-Gordis)@avishaybsg.bsky.social

Israel was ready to strike Iran earlier this month but was halted by the US since trump doesn’t want to attack ahead of midterms. The strike would, according to reports, be larger than the opening salvo of the war in Feb. Note: it would also conveniently mess with Israeli elections next Tuesday.

Do you ever think about how the top right-wing American influencers were found to be on the Russian payroll — hundreds of thousands of dollars each — and nothing ever happened to them, and they all got to keep the money?

America turned out to be far dumber than even I thought as an anti-American teenager. A monstrously stupid place.

Trump: "The first one is they show you a lion, a bear, a snake, and a giraffe. And they say, 'Which one is the giraffe?' I got a perfect score."

American conservatism, demonstrably, is "whatever Donald Trump says." There are no values that can't be bent; it is a movement driven by racism, misogyny and an old man's shitty personality. You can see the problem this poses to author, who needs you (and perhaps himself) to believe This Isn't It.

Also, we really must not forget that Michael Brendan Dougherty is a man who sat down at his computer and composed a tweet about how he'd rather Jesuit rape his children than teach them (because of woke). I will concede that he is a conservative intellectual, actually, but in the pejorative sense.

I think about the Laken Riley Act — the very first bill Trump signed after campaigning on mass deportations, stripping undocumented immigrants of due process — every time I see a Jon Ossoff clip. www.theredoubt.net/congress-kil...

theredoubt.netCongress killed due process, setting the stage for Trump's mass deportationsThe Laken Riley Act stripped undocumented immigrants of a fundamental right, but even that has not been radical enough for this White House.
Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Ex-boss filed a $12 theft charge against an ex-employee because she got a restraining order in response to his creepy behavior. Charge was never prosecuted, but it gave ICE an excuse to arrest and detain her. Congratulations to the 58 Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act. You own this.

Sternenko is a former defence ministry advisor, and his account adds to growing indications that the Trump administration is restricting satellite information to Ukraine—despite denials from Trump that “intelligence cooperation” is being wound down.

❗️Ukrainian volunteer Serhiy Sternenko claims that tonight the operation of Starlink terminals for the Ukrainian military was restricted. According to him, while moving at speeds over 160 km/h, the connection began to drop, which led to the disruption of a number of missions.

A U.S. Air Force member jailed since August for publicly calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment is being held in solitary confinement 24 hours a day, according to his attorney. www.military.com/air-force-ma...

Impeachment may be implausible, but passing a major ethics reform package, through a Fetterman-controlled Senate, that the president won’t sign? The latter is more modest, but I’m not convinced it’s all that more pragmatic.

I’m spiritually ready for Reddit Atheism II

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

On Wednesday, Pete Hegseth announced the creation of a new entity within the Pentagon: the Office of Religious Affairs. The office will “sponsor and oversee research, technology, and analytical tools to support and assess spiritual fitness, spiritual readiness, and spiritual resilience.”

Under Biden, Republicans held a congressional hearing where a witness alleged that Philly DA Larry Krasner was covering up murders to lower his city’s numbers — a power he did not possess, and a theory that falls apart if you think about it literally at all (morgues, families, cops: all complicit?).

On two fronts—WH press access and third-country removals—the administration appears to be ignoring court orders.

BREAKING: The plane appearing to have been scheduled to fly third-country nationals to 3 African countries today—before an appeals court prohibited it last night—has taken off, landed at Gitmo (Somalis in ICE camp there) and is now in San Juan, a common refueling stop for ICE flights to Africa.

RECONSTRUCTION II vs. “I would rather move the ball forward to the benefit of the American people.”

Meredith Shiner@meredithshiner.com

I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.

to be clear, the admin is alleged to have deported AT LEAST 25,447 individuals TO COUNTRIES THAT ARE NOT THEIR OWN with, evidently, ZERO PROTECTIONS. this is a scandal and crime of historic proportions.
