The "arguments" I am criticizing are those in the tweets themselves. If those words are somehow unclear or indecipherable to you, that's not really my fault.

Ugh. He's just a genuinely loathsome person. Could be doing anything and he spends his days scooping up the yucky from the outhouse, rubbing it on himself, and running up to people screaming "love me!"

“Shitty cosmetology certificates” MattY is a prick. That cert is a base requirement for entry into a female-dominated industry that provides proven pathways to ownership, flexibility & solid wages Want to argue the merits of the cert process? Great! It’s too high a floor MattY can stick it sideways✌️

I mean, we certainly don't need any more social workers and teaching aids, and art is something you can always work on as a side gig, amiright.

I have a liberal studies degree and I’m a cosmetologist. I got my liberal studies degree with my cosmetology pay. And now after 37 years of cosmetology, I’ve helped pay for my two son’s college degrees with the money I earn at the hair salon I own. We contribute a lot to society.

He also opposed training for barbers on some bullshit libertarian grounds, iirc. He’s such a font of bad takes, the one time in 1000 when I agree with him is always shocking

Schrödinger’s pundit. You don’t know what he actually believes until you subscribe to his substack. Or you know the secret 3rd level: he doesn’t believe anything

It has always been ridiculous to have tuition costs based on what a fraction of graduates could earn assuming an ideal future economy. Making students pay to go to school leads to fewer grads in socially useful majors, because of course it does. Thatcherism.

But yes, Matty is a troll. He's a rich, privileged Jewish man trolling the Gentiles, and he is promoted by even richer jackasses. A mediocre H. L. Mencken for a neoliberal age.

wtf? cosmetology is one of the most lucrative degrees/certificates you can get depending on your skill set why are we pooh poohing vocational school, which has the highest ROI right now?

Bald, beard man have man view. Man view strong. Man view okay because Obama man and Obama share man view. Man view say play clarinet bad investment. But if want to play clarinet, man view say okay now, just not hair cut person, who probably liberal and maybe even not white.

that's why i just don't think he's worth responding to anymore. he's a professional rage-baiter. that's what he does.

Being a social media provocateur is many people’s business now. Not show how that’s supposed to ‘save Western Civilization’ 🤣

As a charter & continuing subscriber to Yglesias's Substack, I find his trolly social-media posts maddening: His essays are really smart & provocative & well researched, but those occasional posts make everyone here dismiss him, and it's not unjustified!

He’s running the same play Andrew Sullivan did in his blogging days: say horrific shit to the mostly liberal audience who pays your bills, they all go “Hey man, love you but maybe rethink that one,” next day he says different horrific shit

I will never understand how he was still able to get meetings with influential Dems after that. They hadn't even moved those poor kids out of the school when he said that

Always been curious where Vetrinary Assistant's end up? Seems like more and more that job is requiring some post secondary education, and from what I know seems to pay horribly due to so many wanting to do it.

Professional Rage baiter and Internet Influencer are new occupations that replace real-life work like teachers, firemen, nurses, etc. All you need is a computer, a microphone, and people who lack common sense and the ability to reason outside of their personal bubble.

Exactly. When the problem is "we have a dire shortage of social workers because the pay is terrible", the solution should be "let's provide funding for social workers", not "let's make it more expensive to become a social worker". Likewise for educators, health care aides, etc.

I remember when tax rates were based on "how much tax revenue do we need in order to pay for the things that we think are important", not "taxes are theft, we should eliminate them".

Between this and cutting state university support to the bone it seems various levels of gov’t are purposely eliminating the option of an education where people get a grounding in critical thinking. I have a good paying IT job. My degree is in political science. 😛

It's not worth fighting with him about, but it seems like cosmetologists might have a gulf between reported income and actual income (in what is obviously a tips-based business), the kind of thing that might interest him. But that assumes good faith on his part, which is its own mistake.

Graduates of elite schools, no matter the degree, tend to earn more than high school graduates do on average? I don't think elite school programs were under any significant threat from this rule.

It'd mostly punish for-profit schools giving out dubious loans, but the worry I'd have aside from that is the 4 year window makes some degrees at accessible, not-selective schools not viable if they are in fields primarily designed to lead to more school.

... it's way worse than these posts suggest. These are load-bearing jobs for society. (Unfortunately I do not know the source of this, i got it from discord)

ironically it occurs to me that I’ve never seen a tech CEO wheel out a scissor-wielding robot and let it demonstrate how it’s going to make human hairdressers obsolete

Textbook, “I know which majors are worth the investment” behavior. I’m in finance working alongside art history, English, psychology, and many other humanities’ majors who can pay off their loans and more. (And who, btw, are EXCELLENT at their jobs!!)

The people Harvard produces are just awful. We should run a study on how many fascists, incels, radicalizers, and provocateurs they've thrust into national platforms.

I'm being harassed by the federal government because they decided my student loan repayment plan is illegal now. I have a liberal arts degree. I went to a state school, not a private college. I am gainfully employed in my field.

My daughter has a master's in French Horn performance, and works at a university center for the performing arts. Her husband has a master's in trumpet performance and plays Pershings Own Army field band, so the thought that some degrees aren't capable of earning enough is bizarre bullshit.

My daughter studied with Greg Miller at University of Maryland. Early years were very painful on the ears, but she was eventually good enough to attend a performing arts high school and get a music scholarship to Maryland. Saved me a ton of money.👍
