Good thread reflecting on what happened in Brazil.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

The Framers never thought Congress would cede its authority and power to a president. It’s pretty stunning when you think about it.

Every so often I think about the number and scale of catastrophes Trump has baked into the global economy/security situation that haven’t eventuated yet and then sort of shrug and pour another cup of coffee because I can’t do anything about it.

The use of the word “estranged” is irritating me because it’s not capturing the gravity of what happened. Acton’s mother lost custody of her kids because she sided with her husband who sexually assaulted her daughter.

The Downballot@the-downballot.com

Vivek Ramaswamy has not only confirmed the commercial with Amy Acton's estranged mother was made by his campaign, Axios also reports he's now spending $4 million to air it.

Doubling down by backing/platforming a woman who shielded a pedophile tells me so much about the dumpster fire of a campaign Ramaswamy is running. It also shows just how pervasive the Trump effect of never admitting you’re wrong has become.

As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment"

During today’s hearing on the surveillance pricing bill a witness talked about the Amazon holiday toy catalog and how there are no prices listed, just QR codes. I hid this from my kids because it arriving the first wk of October is disrespectful but WOW.

The only “price” is a range — “Under $30.” Growing up, I lived for the Toys R Us catalog that came in the newspaper before Thanksgiving. But I also think seeing the prices gave me a healthy dose of reality and respect for costs.

So he wasn’t cleared to sleep, but he was cleared to play?? 🤨

Ian Rapoport@rapsheet.bsky.social

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season after several blood clots were revealed in his lungs. Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk. He played the game without having slept. Crazy.

That finding was probably written by someone who has Zone 6 which stretches from RFK Stadium to Mt. Vernon Sq. 😏 Best zoned parking benefit in the city given its size.

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social

NERDY PARKING STUFF: A few years ago CMs Christina Henderson and Brooke Pinto suggested that D.C. replace the existing ward-based residential parking zones with more smaller ones. Well, a new report from D.C.'s in-house think tank says smaller zones wouldn't really help with parking issues.

Y’all, we really met that lady at the press briefing on Tuesday and she was out before COB Friday. 😭 OPM didn’t have time to process her healthcare paperwork yet. We didn’t even get a chance to buy lettuce from the farmers market before she was let go. 🤣

But let this be a lesson to all the hiring managers out there: 1. Check references. 2. If the job requires a script or public speaking, a screen test is completely acceptable. 3. A PIP is not for everyone. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

Reminder: Anthropic sets the conditions for which its models operate. Instead of issuing warnings, Anthropic could also change its behavior/policies.

This is not all on DBH or Dept of Healthcare Finance. Medicaid broadly has always been a pay and chase operation when it comes to fraud. Pay the fraudulent claim and then chase repayment later. It’s such an inefficient model. That’s why you don’t see the court cases for yrs.

Wow. This is so random and yet timely news. I’ve had multiple meetings over the past few weeks about mosquitoes, standing water, & the need for treatment strategies in the public space.

Zach Israel@zachisrael.bsky.social

Trump signed an executive order yesterday directing federal agencies to develop and implement, by November 27, a campaign across Washington, D.C. to reduce, by 2028, invasive mosquito populations by 90% & tick populations by 50%: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... @chenderson.bsky.social

We need to have a real conversation about the art of a follow-up question. But none of that matters if the Senator is not even *listening* to the responses.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

wow -- Darline Graham cuts off Jack Smith just as Smith start explaining how her brother Lindsey in fact denounced Trump's lies about the 2020 election on the Senate floor

And know it’s not just Senators who do this. Up and down levels of government oversight is lacking because folks are skipping prep sessions and thus are handcuffed to a script.

Didn’t think Caitlin Clark would get invoked in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, but here we are.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

holy shit -- turns out Jack Smith went to a Hawkeyes game in Maryland but Schmitt's team is so reckless they concocted a conspiracy theory that Smith was actually in Atlanta seeing a Hawks game and colluding with Fani Willis. Klobuchar points out to Schmitt, "you have your teams wrong."

Too many electeds these days want to be influencers and celebrities instead of policymakers.

So Nancy Mace is now hosting a podcast called 'Get Maced' in a leather catsuit. And no you did not hallucinate that sentence.

Oh. After the hearing in the bills, we have an oversight roundtable on a matter than has 2 agencies — DC Health & OSSE — finger pointing at each other on who is to blame. Best way to resolve? Bring everyone in for a hearing because I’m tired.

The Council was prepared to move emergency legislation before recess to alleviate the backlog. DC Health promised they had a plan to fix the problem, including bringing on a new contractor. Ladies and gentlemen, how many people do you believe took the exam over the summer??

We are wasting people’s time. We are wasting the people’s money. And we are not taking seriously the workforce challenge in front of us. People are raising their hands to get trained, but the government can’t even manage to schedule the test. Tune in tomorrow at 2:30pm.

Imagine — the city is facing a workforce crisis in terms of long term care, so we establish programs to train folks as Certified Nurse Aides. To build the pipeline, we’ve gone so far as to offer the certification to high school students through our Advanced Technical Centers.

Tomorrow, the Committee on Health will have a hearing on 3 bills. Two of those bills are about the student health forms…yes, the ones pediatricians & dentists charge families for but always mysteriously get lost at schools. This is going to fun…. (keep reading)

So we’re scrambling to turn in the forms that aren’t even making it to the health dept? 🤔 Now you may be asking, how then do they verify that kids are vaccinated? There is an electronic system where providers report vaccinations right to DC Health.

In pre-hearing prep, we asked DC Health how many universal health certificates were submitted during SY25-26. They reported 10%. Well now, that makes absolutely no sense considering DCPS and charter schools require the form upon enrolling your child in school.

There’s no way only 8,281 forms were submitted out of nearly 100K public school students. Come to find out — parents, when we upload the student health forms online during enrollment, DC Health does not get access to those. DC Health only gets paper forms turned into schools.
