Let's talk more about this during #WeekWithoutDriving - centralincycling.org/week-without...
“It’s not the worst, but it’s not the best.” 🚌 IndyGo bus riders are speaking out on transit reliability after a new report ranks the city’s system among the four worst in the U.S. https://tinyurl.com/522tzuk4
This this this!
Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.
Indiana: We're gonna stop collecting the gas tax. That'll fix it. Miami, Ohio: Fuel prices are wacky. Hey! Let's invest in transit and rail. www.miamistudent.net/article/2025... @amtrak.com
Is anyone at the state level talking about buying that quarry and building in a spillway so that it can be critically important flood control for the region? Now is the time for that type of planning. Extreme weather and rain events are going to get more extreme.

Taking poor people off Healthcare amid rapidly rising health insurance costs is the pinnacle of evil. Nobody. Nobody likes JD. The dude is a weasel. I'm embarrassed to have grown up in the same town as that filth.
Vice President JD Vance announced the Trump administration plans to remove 760,000 Affordable Care Act enrollees amid fraud allegations. The plan is intended to save $2.2 billion. FULL STORY: https://tinyurl.com/8as3wf2x
But wait, there's more. youtu.be/zDceYRpo0fg?... OMG. How? Where's the bottom?

We did a thing. It includes a fun mural and makes it safer for all road users. We have to remove it by Nov 1st. Then it will suck again. @centralincycling.org
I'm on the Indianapolis Fatal Crash Review Team. Our PD rarely pulls a phone warrant after a fatal crash. That is the norm. They don't see an issue with that. It drives me nuts.
This is a wild statistic (from IIHS, a very reputable research org): "Cellphone use prior to crashes is undercounted in police reports by a factor of at least 7."
Current state law in IN treats both e-motos & e-mopeds like full-up motorcycles, but consumers (parents, teens, & utility riders) don't know that. They're not getting them registered, they aren't insured, & young folks definitely aren't licensed motorcycle riders. docs.google.com/presentation...
Person walking struck and hospitalized by yet another Indy hit-and-run driver right next to Brookside Park. WTF?

Oh hey Carmel. I see you clutching those pearls.
If my attitude sucks, it's because I had to write an email explaining to all of the city council and the mayor why a "dismount and walk your bike" proposal is an absolutely ignorant policy proposal, but in a diplomatic fashion. "Dear dipshits" doesn't seem to win hearts and minds.
Thoughtful post about a surprising lack of pre-flood response in Indy as we knew what was coming downriver from record rains and flooding upstream.
My latest article A closer look at the lack of preparation of the Hogsett administration last week as flooding ravaged city after city upstream of Indianapolis mrwildstyle.substack.com/p/highwater-...
This seems nuts. The new normal for heavy rainfall is certainly exciting for anyone with a basement.
After Wednesday storms dumped close to 10 inches of rain in central Indiana counties, rain chances close out the week before temperatures approach 90 this weekend FULL STORY: https://tinyurl.com/2ucx57fa
Hmm. You mean it isn't e-bikes?
“Here’s what we found: Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”
So. The Indy Councilor, Bain, that just approved the hyperscale data center in his district was just appointed to the state's utility regulator. Hmm. This seems very Indiana. mirrorindy.org/indianapolis...

I get to have meetings with pearl clutching Indiana leaders about the dangers of 40 mph e-motorcycles (< 200 lb vehicles), but they won't talk about the dangers of 6,000 lb racing SUVs with no speed limiter and no requirement for special licensing or permits for use on public roads & neighborhoods.
It's difficult to believe that something so heavy can accelerate faster than some of the most extreme performance cars in the world.

This shows what can be done with a strategy and sense of urgency!
Beijing’s bicycle comeback might be one of the world's most significant urban cycling revivals. After decades of decline, its mode share has climbed back to almost 30%, supported by over 3,200 kilometres of infrastructure, extensive bike-sharing systems, and an ambitious program of street redesign.🧵
We've had so many good infrastructure projects (safer for all, by design) get squashed by an alliance of car-centric folks and *only bike in motor vehicle lanes* Forresterites.
Hear our two-parter on John Forrester and his book, "Effective Cycling," the bible of vehicular cycling. While we've come a long way, cities are still feeling the effects of his movement. thewaroncars.org/2024/07/09/1...

Good things are possible.
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas and city center in 2021.”

What's up Bloomington, IN mayor? Why do you suck? Your small college city is ideal for a section of bike and pedestrian blocks.
The Bloomington mayor has vetoed a proposal to close five blocks of Kirkwood Avenue to vehicles for 6-1/2 months of the year and open it only to pedestrians. https://tinyurl.com/838uzuj7
Giant pickup trucks and tank-like SUVs are a dangerous scourge. They need to be heavily regulated and the drivers should have specialized commercial vehicle driver training.
The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.
