A big new story from us: a big new leak means that we can put numbers on the scale of A7 -- the Kremlin's huge money-laundering machine. $6.9bn laundered through the international banking system via SWIFT, with $1.1bn sent to StanChart alone. www.ft.com/content/3848...

ft.comKremlin-backed forgery scheme moved $6.9bn through global banksFT finds thousands of Russian payments handled by Standard Chartered, Citigroup and other international groups in vast leak from inside fintech A7

It’s one of those irregular verbs: I embrace a blockchain-based alternative payments system, you engage in money-laundering.

The threat of sanctions finally attracts the attention of Israeli media and voters. Thanks to Netanyahu, who promises Israelis a blockchain based economy to circumvent future sanctions. A massive own-goal just four days before polling day; he seems to be losing his game.

Good news: there is already is a prominent Israeli citizen working in this area, and his company already has staff in Israel. Bad news: it’s Ilan Shor, the Moldovan bank robber whose A7 has just been deemed a Transnational Criminal Organization [sic] by the US Treasury. www.ft.com/content/3848...

We’re in a bad equilibrium. A priori, we should be against MPs doing casework because it is a means of building taxpayer-funded patronage - but while some MPs do it, all will. But also some institutions have become unresponsive to citizens who don’t escalate cases.

Duncan Robinson@duncanrobinson.bsky.social

Replying in a quote because it’s an interesting thread. Basically, I firmly disagree. It’s ineffective altruism. Lawmakers are powerful and can do big things and should focus on that. Indeed if they did that, there would (or should) be fewer problems to mop up!

(this is a smaller deal than it sounds: these posts are really 'lead TV/radio reporter for topic x', and these ones have only existed since 2014)

Michael Savage@michaelsavage.bsky.social

NEW: BBC will no longer have a dedicated education editor as part of proposal that will see 100 jobs go across BBC News. School leaders call the plan “deeply regrettable” and ask for a rethink. Education/Social affairs editor jobs being combined. www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...

The BBC should give more power to its specialist editors to actually direct coverage (as they do everywhere else), and build more routes for specialist reporters. But they don't, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

my meta-take on all this as a veteran of these arguments is that the key reason England has done so much better is the *attention* on improvement in schools since Baker, rather than anything in particular, and it has seeped into the water.

"GILRUTH: ENGLISH ROTE LEARNING A FACTOR IN LOWER SCOTS PISA SCORES" @AlistairKGrant.bsky.social for @Scotsman.com Jenny Gilruth suggested Scottish pupils trailed England in PISA scores due to Michael Gove's focus on rote learning in English schools. #TheScotsman #TomorrowsPapersToday

PISA results should come with huge asterisks because of how it gathers results, and some other jurisdictions do cheat. But the consistent results for England are a signal you can see in the fog.

Update: the A7 entity involved has just been sanctioned by the UK.

Our latest on A7: a British businessman active in UK finance was named by Ilan Shor as CEO of VexPay, part of the A7 network, according to A7’s own interbal minutes (he denies it) www.ft.com/content/b3c4...

Is A7, the Kremlin's favourite massive money launderer, learning from its early mistakes?

Chris Cook@chriscook.news

Our next on A7: how subtle were the front companies? Not very. Banks could see they were reusing the same addresses, had linked online infrastructure and clearly observed Russian holidays. But they were getting better. www.ft.com/content/372d...

This is a big deal for two big reasons - first, it helps answer some of the question of what Rosneft was doing with its foreign earnings, and second, it tells us how A7 was able to keep getting its hands on hard currency.

The US Treasury has just wheeled out a load of sanctions on A7 and its agents

Great reminder that, for all the advances with crypto, nothing beats old fashioned money laundering through the banking system

SWIFT relies on sending banks to do the police work. The new leak shows us how the Kyrgyz banks, first, then UAE banks (esp First Abu Dhabi) let entities move billions into the traditional interbank system. FAB let A7 open accounts and send $1.8bn (They say they've spotted and stopped this).

I think some of the stuff about cryptoassets being used for political donations is a bit muddled: a) there’s no reason a payment in crypto is hard to handle. You can easily make systems that only accept payments *after* a KYC process.

Not straightforward, this: you could ban the sale of crypto assets by registered entities, but - in the one case we’ve got in the UK - the sale was arranged by a third party who then gave the money to a renowned pint-sized agitator.

It turns out: campaigners are On This. They’ve highlighted a second case of a regulated donee receiving cash from a memecoin fundraiser (whose real provenance is unknown) bsky.app/profile/timp...

Tim Picton@timpicton.bsky.social

We've been working with MPs (and now peers) to pressue the government to extend their ban on crypto donations to cover any proceeds from memecoins or digital tokens. As you say, there's a big loophole as it stands! www.spotlightcorruption.org/a-bold-first...

Conversely: (b) we have already seen memecoins used to fund anti-democratic movements in the UK, and it’s not clear to me that a sale of a memecoin would count as a “donation” that requires registration rather than proceeds of the commercial activity of the party. So I could issue a billion…

…CookCoins, sells them for a pound a throw to a pal occupying Crimea and - so long as I was willing to argue it was a commercial operation akin to other memecoins - I wouldn’t have to disclose the donors.
