Does anyone believe that fixing Ottawa’s transit system is all about uploading the light rail to the province?
Would an LRT upload fix transit in Ottawa for you?
#ottawa#betterottawa#613trending
Having failed to deliver LRT, manage it effectively or deliver on promises made, uploading will relieve the city from accountability; it won’t do anything for bus commuters, nor other public means of getting around (bike share, sidewalks, etc).
And remember: there’s on 1 taxpayer. And it’s us.
Good coverage by @capitalcurrent.bsky.social of @en.ottawa.ca's problematic report on Right Turns On Red.
“I don’t think that there’s ever an argument to prefer momentary convenience for drivers over the safety of everyone else,” van Geest said. #RTOR#OttCitycapitalcurrent.ca/right-on-red...
“ Staff need another study on the private delivery model bike share”
1. If the private model worked we would have bike share.
2. Is staff going to investigate funding roads or Transit as a private model? No.
Council needs to give clear direction: get on with bike share.
A poignant reminder that Ottawa’s council and senior staff accept traffic deaths as inevitable. Its policy:
❌ Scarce funding for traffic calming
❌ No commitment to Vision Zero
❌ No political will to prevent another tragedy
This election year remember those who offer nothing but condolences.
Ottawa has nearly a billion $ allocated for the coming years, all for roads/widenings in rural/suburban wards tk reduce car commutes by seconds or minutes. Meanwhile our transit network is starved for funding. Map credit @sjamieit.bsky.social
Good Morning Ottawa.
#Ottcity LRT Line 1 is now out of service in its 3rd day:
🦗 No communications from Mark Sutcliffe.
📣 No updates on return to full service.
😕 No expression of regrets to riders.
🤷♂️ No plan.
Tragedy exposes weak standards. Canada lags the EU on vehicle size and pedestrian impact safety, and people are dying because of it. Rapid change means opportunity—align our vehicle rules with Europe now
Yet another pedestrian killed by the driver of an oversized pickup. It's time to regulate the size of large pickups and SUVs before they kill more of our neighbours. Vehicles this size offer no practical utility over smaller counterparts.

“We're going to have to give a level of service in terms of the number of people using it... Maybe you don't need a bus every five minutes. Maybe every 10 minutes is fine.”

Demolition of a 4M artwork commissioned a decade ago, along with a stadium with decades of life remaining, while Transit and infra renewal are wholly neglected, is peak Sutcliffe council.
Vote them out in 2026.
Take note of the Watson/Sutcliffe council for 2026:
Most of the incumbents who voted for starving Transit and infrastructure renewal in favour of Tewin and OSEG handouts are running again.
Consider donating to @strongtownsottawa.ca@horizonottawa.bsky.social to hold those voting records account.

Had a blast at Kidical Mass in Orléans! 🚲
Families out riding together, decorating bikes, and filling the streets with colour and energy. Thanks Convent Glen Orléans Wood Community Association, Matt and Rob, for hosting. I was proud to support this awesome event!

Speed enforcement cameras work to keep neighbourhoods safe by reducing dangerous speeding. I and @catmckenney.bsky.social ask you to write to your MPP and Premier Ford to oppose legislation that would ban their use in Ontario cities.
Some seriously big energy at #KidicalMass from the #BikeHfx crew today! Today was a strong reminder that society undermines the strength of our kids. These kids WANT TO MOVE! But we limit them so aggressively through poor policy & design decisions. Grateful for the organizers & marshalls!
Carrying a weapon conveys power over others by threat of lethality.
Being threatened by a driver of a multi-ton vehicle is no different. Change my mind.
I get the urge to compare road violence and gun violence. It can help people see the ways road violence has been accepted and unquestioned in useful ways.
But a key difference bw road violence & gun violence (in Canada at least) is that it's easy to live everyday life without toting a gun around.
The Gladstone/Percy cycling study originally proposed contra-flow bike lanes on Percy and bike lanes on Gladstone.
Now, instead of a simple left turn onto Gladstone, the proposal would have a north-westbound biker go from Percy to Flora, Bay, Gilmore, Bronson, Christie, Arthur, THEN Gladstone.
I will always proceed though a worksite vs risking my life with drivers on a multi-lane road like Preston.
We need a shift in #Ottawa where residents(esp children) are given the same rights as construction workers around car traffic.

A net-good #Ottawa sidewalk story 🧵1/2
Good news: In time for the school year, new sidewalks! Used by 100’s of Broadview and Nepean HS students daily. Kudos to planners for 2m sidewalks, 3m car lanes, reducing crosswalk distance and slowing down drivers.
Canada has a #StopDeKindermord history too, complete with stereotypical "sorry".
The difference between Canada and the Netherlands: we didn't see widespread change and action decades ago. We're still asking for it today.

A trip to a museum on transit for a family of 4 would cost $32. Driving and parking $6.
We need to flip the this, make the externality costs of the later pay for the former.
What’s your urbanism take that the general public would absolutely hate?
Mine is that making driving or parking less convenient can be incredibly helpful to public transit and active transportation.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.
(15 in Manhattan btw)
Unacceptable.
Pickup trucks and their drivers are killing children. The federal government must act on #CarBloat. We must prioritize children's lives
#StopDeKindermoord#StopKillingKids
Horrible news.
Yesterday, a pickup truck driver hit & killed a one-year-old girl in Calgary.
Today, a pickup truck driver hit & killed a nine-year-old girl in Spruce Grove, near Edmonton.
Both happened just outside homes: One in the back alley, on off the front driveway.
I witnessed the aftermath of a cyclist getting hit by a car turning right yesterday, just a couple of blocks from where Saloni Aitawadekar was killed while crossing the street near City Hall.
It’s time to seriously consider banning right turns on red in Ottawa’s downtown core.
Are you tired of circling the block trying to find a parking spot, #OttCity?
We are here to help by making parking easier to find.
Starting in September, paid on-street parking will be changing in select high-demand areas.

Don’t stop short, Ottawa. Parking is massively subsidized in however you math it. This small externality revenue must be put to sustainable transportation, such as Transit and Bike Share, offering equitable transportation to all. 2/3
For parking alternatives look to Calgary, which has a transit free-fare corridor serving downtown businesses. It’s time Ottawa look to do the same for Richmond, Bank, Stitsville main. Offering more options to visit Main Street businesses is a win for all.
I am 100% ready to join you to “ban right on red”. Montreal has this, but only because that’s the way it always was. Other cities elected to allow right turns on red, to allow for greater traffic flow. And look who’s paying the price. Day after day, another tragedy. Make this an election issue.
The cyclist got hit at the exact same intersection I was about to bike by, it could have been me. We need to consider banning right on red in all downtown intersections. You shouldn’t be taking your life in your hands every time you walk or cycle. A woman got killed crossing the street a block away.
Imagine sidewalks were always there and the city wanted to pull them out. Would the anti-sidewalkers cheer this on?
Probably not, but change is harder for some. I hope the city is able to convey why the community needs this in simple terms. And then get on with it.
This is what happens when sidewalks and traffic calming, as part of an evidenced-based policy with #VisionZero principles, comes to an inner urban area of 1950s homes in Ottawa.
And why does the community need this?
800k car trips are made every day in Ottawa. 80% of those trips are under 5km. If you want less traffic in your ’hood, then you want sidewalks and bike infrastructure everywhere.
Sneak peak of tomorrow's route -and potential special guests 🐮🐮🐮
Meet 9:30am at Meadowvale Terrace Park, Ride departs at 10am, storytelling and BYO snacks back at the park between 10:45-11am.

What’s the best way to visit the tulip festival, you ask? By bike of course. You can walk your bike if it’s not too busy. Alternatively there are plenty of bike rack throughout Commissioners Park, including these really cute ones at the dock (good for all types of bikes).
