Really love having a deepest dive on a game with this many strengths and weaknesses! Fascinating discussion.

There is no one better than Ashley at making basic-ass news and previews GENUINELY compelling to read. I do not know how she does it. The most obvious hire in the world.

MiB holds a special place in my heart bc it was the first pg-13 movie my parents ever let me check out from the library. When I first watched it, I just couldn't believe how funny it was. Basically hold the same opinion now.

Biggest ding against the AC8 is my HOTAS setup just doesn't register to the game. Seems identical to AC7 in that it'll have to be programmed in manually, and idk where the config files are. Disappointing!

@jacobgeller.com Did you use a controller or the flight stick and VR rig again like Ace 7?

Ace Combat 8 embargo up. It's the best game in the series. It's one of the best games of the year. Miracles do exist.

Jacob Geller@jacobgeller.com

Ahead of Ace Combat 8's release, I feel like my potentially blasphemous ranking of the series (that I've played) is: Five > Four > Six > Zero > Seven which feels kinda nuts to write out but also the delta between the first and last on that list is tiny.

BIG ASTERISK: I did a sponsored event with Bandai that will be revealed soon, so I'm not an unbiased source on this. They didn't stipulate any posts that I should make on AC8 (I am losing my mind about it entirely sincerely) but I would wanna know if this was the case for someone else!!

Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

Five brings everything together for me, Four has the best story, Six has the best missions, Zero has a lotta style, Seven is gorgeous but maybe the least fun missions/least compelling story

Great article on how sheriff's deputies in Durham, N.C. are referring people to ICE for very minor offenses. The cooperation between local cops and the immigration goon squads is a growing stain on America indyweek.com/news/durham-...

I've been struggling with Townfall, but seeing positive reviews from folks like Lewis make me want to persevere.

Lewis Gordon@lewisgordon.bsky.social

Silent Hill: Townfall is good — very good, in fact. Especially the sequence in a municipal-style high rise building which plays like a slow-burn, Ballardian take on The Raid. It's a game less of psychosexual terror than psychosocial dread: I was hooked. www.theguardian.com/games/2026/s...

Most of my frustration comes from the fact thatit's almost fully a stealth game now, with *extremely* limited options for dispatching enemies. It's made the game feel unfortunately one-note for me, just sitting behind something while an enemy I can't kill slowly turns around.

After about 5 hours I turned the combat down to "story" difficulty (maybe the first time I've ever done this lol) and I'm still finding it grating. But the Scottish town stuff is done so well!! And so I want to push through!

As a Wolverine Hater™, it's been disappointing to see so much of the conversation focus on stuff like the QTEs, which I really don't think are the failure points of the game. But I guess it's the easiest thing to post dumb-looking clips of!

Kotaku@kotaku.com

What Resident Evil 4 tells us about why Wolverine's QTEs don't work, and it's not the lack of fail states that people keep complaining about https://kotaku.com/missing-fail-states-arent-the-problem-with-marvels-wolverines-qtes-its-everything-else-2000735298

I truly think the hand-holdy stuff in the game wouldn't be annoying if the combat and traversal felt good! The problem is they don't. But the combat and traversal are *animated well*, and so they don't look dumb in 10-second clips.
