You’re gonna want to see what the BlueSky guys have decided is too intolerant for you to read.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

I've looked at a lot of Facebook comments about the consent advert. A few observations: -- Far more people support the advert than I'd expect. -- Far less negative engagement (laughing faces, etc) than is usual with a backlash. -- A lot of people not liking the advert but then agreeing with it...

Ok, with all the talk of The Cheesecake Factory, I had to finally look it up to get an idea of what they look like. Now I just want cake. (In fairness, me wanting cake is likely the least worst thing that has come from US politics in a while)

The video here may seem shocking, but the polling -- from three diffrent group, including the first from the aChord Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem -- shows it's not a fringe view in Israel:

Owen Jones@owenjones.bsky.social

Just listen to this. Then consider these polls: 76% of Jewish Israelis think there are no innocents in Gaza (Aug 2025) 82% support expelling Palestinians from Gaza (May 2025) 47% support killing all inhabitants of conquered enemy cities (May 2025)

A bus. And yet it takes decades to talk about. Endless reports and consultations. A bus.

-- On top of that, people are getting caught up in the feeling of loss for their grandparents. -- I should say that a high percentage of the comments supporting the adverts seem to be from women, at least more so than the usual issues the far right tries to make into a culture war on Facebook.

These are just observations, and FB is not a barometer of anything more widely, and I'm mostly comparing FB here to what it can normally be like on these issues.

-- Of those who disagree with the advert, once they are challenged by others and they bother to respond, a lot of ranting about "woke" and some strange comments about respecting elders, etc. -- There's a lot of people clearly misunderstanding the basics of consent and bodily autonomy...

-- A lot of anger seems to come from the incorrect idea that the advert is drawing a straight line from the grandparents pictured to sexual abuse. -- From that, some are openly saying the advert is making hugs out to be "evil" or suggesting grandparents should be hugging children (clearly not)...

-- Some people saying grandparents would never force a hug, alongside comments (from a minority of commenters) saying they'll give a hug even if it's not wanted. -- As well as a low negative laughing faces, etc, there also seems to be a low level of negative replies to supporting comments...

I assume everyone who wrote about the hospital bike shed in their columns and talked about the hospital bike shed on their radio shows and tweeted about the hospital bike shed on their Nazi owned micro blogging app are very excited to discuss this

Before and after: 6 years ago, Utrecht restored the Catharijnesingel. Once filled in during the 1970s to make way for traffic, the historic canal now flows again around the old city, lined with pedestrian paths, bike lanes, and a park-like landscape.

Is saying what is or is not genocide not taking a stand? Is going against a UN Commission on what is or isn't genocide not taking a stand?

Sam Tranum@samtranum.bsky.social

Does John Banville think artists have a duty to take a stance on moral issues? His stand is apparently for amorality. www.independent.ie/irish-news/s...

To be clear, his pronouncements on genocide are from the same interview where he's quoted as saying: "Second-rate artists and mediocrities can take a stand. Real artists don’t take a stand on anything".

My piece in @thejournal.ie today about the incredibly frustrating experience of trying to combat invasive plant species in Ireland. In particular, the lack of urgency or even halfhearted support from the state or councils when communities are willing to do most of the hard work locally.

thejournal.ieInvasive species are spreading across Ireland. So why is the response so inadequate? With unclear licensing rules and confusion over waste facilities, Orla ní Dhúill found that Ireland’s response to invasive species is leaving affected communities with few options.

This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.

Place the gruntles of the disgruntled against the right of children to *decide if they want to be touched just now* and this isn’t even a debate. The children’s right to bodily autonomy tower over the transient wants of the disgruntled would be hugger. It’s not even a fine balance.

Listening to radio this afternoon it seems the main gripe is from grandparents in their 60s who feel patronized for being specifically targeted (as if they didnt already know and respect their grandkids). Mind boggling.

I feel more and more that we're in the dystopian future of powerful companies authorities are afraid to tackle... the kind of ones sci-fi warned us about...

The real world Vs chasing culture war clicks:

Great, after getting the roof re slated and treating spots of woodworm as the roofers went along, an inspection has shown there is still active woodworm in the roof! Visions of retirement was never really something I had, but as the days go by I'm less sure I'll see it.

We're lucky to have a house over our heads, but it feels bitter sweet. We had to buy when we did too as we were on the verge of renting costing so much that we'd never be able to buy.

Part of me wonders why I'm not mad. But then I also have to say that this is just a bit of venting... woodworm is just another thing. But it's another thing that keeps us for longer with an oil based heating system, etc, etc, and it just feels crushing at times... Ok, that's enough venting!

The presence of woodworm was one of the main questions we asked when buying the house. But sure the sellers not knowing about it, doesn't help us now. It's not just the roof or woodworm. It's the cost of everything from the house to energy that always feels like it's mounting.

One clear reason that the world should not have billionaires or these kinds of large donations anywhere near politics:

The position taken by the Minister for Justice and by the Minister for Health expressed to the Dáil and in this statement is that children's bodies are subject to rights of other family members to access to them. If your granddaughter doesn't want a hug, you should not insist on your right to hug.

Turns out a lot of grandparents are snowflakes* *sample size is this afternoons Liveline may not be representative of the whole population.

Some people are cracking up on Liveline on @rteradio1.bsky.social, as you might expect. One woman with an English accent is getting so offended and then ranting about others being woke. Again, a reminder that the real snowflakes are the ones who fling around the word woke as if it's a bad thing.

Joe, it's appalling! ...I mean, Kieran. Honestly, this is crazy. Another person -- sounding like she's nearly in tears -- is claiming the advert was trying to ban hugging or something. It clearly was not.

Just to be clear: The show had people with different views. Only the outlandished ones brought me away from the work I was trying to do...

A person who takes issue with the idea that sexual predators are from within families, and when challenged that it is where more predators are from, she goes on for about a minute saying nothing. Now an 88-year-old who says he's a hugger is taking offence because a child didn't want to hug him?

Yet another caller wants the focus to be outside of family members and on teaching children about stranger danger... They also have to be reminded that the largest risk comes from within families.

This non-story is a perfect example of why you should judge people who still use Twitter. I have no doubt this is all manufactured culture war bollocks by socially conservative populists and is the biggest story of the day over there, yet this is the first I'm hearing of it here, in the real world.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

If you still use twitter, you are competing for oxygen with Aontú/Independent Ireland. The system is rigged in their brand of screeching anti-woke shite. Why would you bother sharing the pitch with them? This also confirms a government minister still thinks that twitter reflects real life. Worrying.
