Seeing Real Women Have Curves on Broadway last summer was bittersweet. It was wonderful to see myself represented on stage, but sad as the show was in its closing weekend. It’s taken me 6+ months to because I keep getting emotional, but I finally wrote it… loteriachicana.com/2026/02/21/r...

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

I know I’m gonna sound like a spoiled Dodger fan, but the irony of my kids finally being old enough to stay up for a big game and I’m not home because work travel. Anyway, glad their hearts weren’t broken by this team.

i have said this before but when “getting rid of race in admissions” for the administration means “you can’t even try to reach out to underrepresented communities and encourage them to apply and if you do it is illegal discrimination against white people” then the actual goal here is segregation

We starting playing the NPR Sunday Puzzle last spring.

Am I reading into it, or are the footnotes kinda catty? Or is that just legalese, which I don’t read much.

In these times I've been getting flashbacks to early 2020 when we didn't yet know how COVID-19 was going to impact us. There were huge impacts in my work at a university. I won't even get into all the changes with school and childcare.

Hearing that DOGE went into the Dept of Education today and shut down almost the entirety of the department's in-house research arm, Institute of Educational Sciences, cancelling contracts totally about $900m.

NSBE’s national convention is coming up… interesting to see what their career & college fair will look like.

I've already added a bunch of the books friends with similar taste has listed as their favorites so my list keeps growing. It's not a bad problem to have and makes me thankful for libraries. Below are my goals/intentions for the year in reading:

“No one ever really leaves” - day 1 lesson from #thatsite

It’s so funny, there’s a long social media tradition going back 25 years of making a big deal about how you were going to quit, and then only being gone for like half a day.

I read this for the first time 6 weeks ago. It starts in 2024 on the main character’s birthday. LA was already burning and experiencing drought in 1993 when the book was published. Growing up in LA we already had such bad air quality there were smog days regularly.

Leah Stokes@leahstokes.bsky.social

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

Lepucki: “Here was a tale set in the world I knew in my darkest hours: the ravaged, water-starved, earthquake-ridden, fire-eaten Southern California that plays in my dreams, a vision of my dear, troubled homeland that will keep me up at night if I let it. This book-it was already in my bloodstream.”

This whole thread re the budget cuts on the LAFD and fact check of a fact check is worth a read comes down to this:

AND TO BE CLEAR the underlying issue—drought conditions, almost certainly spurred by global warming—drying out everything coupled with hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, would not have been solved by a few tens of millions of dollars.

I keep looking at the maps in thinking of all the people I know in the evacuation zones or near it. My family in LA is okay and out of imminent danger. My brother works in Altadena and is having a tough time knowing that families he’d see daily have lost so much.

Yesterday, I replied to a post on Threads where someone reflected on day 4 of Dry January. That prompted my own short reflection and this longer one.

I know I’m firmly in my señora era now that I’m in my 40s because I asked my cousin where her 3-month old’s socks were when I met him. We were outside in Southern California so it wasn’t cold, but it was like a reflex.
