It’s so funny, there’s a long social media tradition going back 25 years of making a big deal about how you were going to quit, and then only being gone for like half a day.

I remember noted DC blowhard Ted Cruz posting on Twitter for weeks about how he was leaving Twitter for Parler, and how it was SOOOO much better over there. I left Twitter when Elmo took over, but I'm guessing that Ol'Rafael is still there.

With usenet, my social media came with my email and we called fake accounts people's sock puppets. Arguments were flame wars, and people would say "don't feed the trolls" and then 2 paragraphs inviting you to enjoy a beer and join them for a parlay, sometimes in 3rd person.

“I’m leaving the internet forever”, capped by an almost instantaneous reappearance, and several more attempts at garnering attention henceforth, date back to March 1991. You know, mere days after the internet went “public”. What we used to say back then: “A flounce! How original! *yawn*”.

I've quit several social media platforms at this point. Threads is going to be joining Friendster, MySpace, Twitter, and a few others pretty soon.

genuinely don't miss that lol I understand saying it for a boycott or whatever, but just leave! if someone misses you, they can reach you via telephone or shout into the void like the rest of us
