An intro: I'm a poet and performer; a lot of my actual work is visiting schools, colleges, etc. to use art as a doorway into dialogue—about power, agency, counter-narrative masculinity, and beyond. Find my sci-fi poetry book, climate crisis concept album, booking info, and more: guante.info/latest

In a discourse that is so eaten up by the binary of "we can't draw lines because it hurts the broader effort" on one side, and "we can't draw lines because who are you to say we draw it here and not there" on the other, there's a lot of care and clarity (not to mention bravery) in this piece.

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

"No matter who wins in November, what happens next will depend on who keeps showing up. Learn from Minnesota organizers: Don't just vote, find your people and join an organization that will still be building people power after the election." Something to amplify, on 11/4 or any day of the year:

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

New post from my free (non-substack) newsletter. Aside from a few personal updates, I write a bit about this moment: Trump's attacks on Minneapolis and Ilhan Omar, narrative interventions, and why I choose to vote even when voting is never enough:

Inkwell Books here in NE MPLS had a call for zines go out, so I dropped off a few bundles: each one has zines on abolition, creative resistance, building a culture of consent, and more. The bundles are five bucks, but all the zines are also available to read for free at guante.info/zines.

Two days ago, after Trump’s latest attempt to whip up violence against Somali immigrants in Minnesota:

Ilhan Omar@ilhanmn.bsky.social

Trump’s obsession with demonizing the Somali community is dangerous and reprehensible. Hate to break it to him: Somali Minnesotans are resilient. We will not let Trump intimidate us. Our neighbors have our back.

For those going to the MinnPost Festival today, I'll be sharing a song and a poem along with @seemore.bsky.social as SECRET RIVERS, and I just saw that the lineup also includes Chastity Brown, Jillian Rae, Paul Metsa, and Maria Isa! Thanks to @jimwalshmpls.bsky.social for pulling us together.

Doesn't feel constructive to respond to Trump's daily outrages here, where almost everyone I interact with is on the same page. Once in a while, though (like today, with his incitement of a racist pogrom where I live), I'll share something with my 43k FB followers: www.facebook.com/share/p/1Hmq...

Comprehensive sex education does reduce sexual violence perpetration. But the most effective programs are in a K-12 environment. This is a fight we should be having with public school districts and state legislatures.

Something I love about spoken word is that it doesn't always lend itself to snappy pullquotes; my favorite performances *build* both in energy and message; you have to listen to the whole thing to get it. Such a striking, generous poem on what can be a difficult topic. (CC: @litbowl.bsky.social)

Here is the video of my poem, The Secret Of The Poets, which has gone mini-viral on insta. It's about the use of generative AI for emotional moments. I had three minutes on the biggest stage I'm ever likely to have, and this is what I did with it. I've also posted the text version (see below).

I wrote about the campus sexual assault crisis that never went away despite the public moving on after the Obama era; the material ways SA punishes victims the rest of their lives while assailants are systematically rewarded; and just tried to put to words what I think is going unsaid right now:

currentaffairs.orgThe Campus Sexual Assault Crisis Never Went AwayAt Cornell, a district attorney dismissed an alleged rape case without ever speaking to Jane Doe—and her story is all too common.

This was a good read today too. "I think there’s plenty of reasons why voting early is smart and tactically sound and grounded. But if I was keeping it simple, Kelly, I would just say it frees more people up to do more other kinds of important work." - @ashdashlee.bsky.social

Puff the Magic Hater@mskellymhayes.bsky.social

I talked with Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson about how our communities can defend the voting process this November. Some folks reached out and asked me if I could make an episode about this subject because they were tired of simply being told to vote harder and wanted to know what more we could do. ❤️

"Meanwhile, what we need to demand from universities far and wide is clear: Cease to be a place where sexual assault is often subject to less punishment than protesting and plagiarism. Cease to be a place where the consequences for sexual-assault victims are often greater than for the perpetrators."

...I try to land on that point when I do consent programming: we can't minimize the scope of the problem, but we also shouldn't minimize the power of the advocates, survivors, and organizers actively *doing* the work to address the problem. Real shifts have happened; it's not enough. Both are true.

...don't let high-profile cases become thinkpiece wars or abstract outrage posturing: evergreen call to find the people doing this work (campus advocates, community resources, etc.) and find concrete ways to support them. Maybe it's donations, signal-boosting, becoming an advocate yourself, etc.

ICE has fallen out of the headlines but July marked the largest number of migrant detentions ever on record. Five migrants have died in ICE custody in the last two months. It's also currently impossible to legally migrate to this country, as 100% of visa applications have been paused.

“There’s always a thing you can deny an oppressor, if only your allegiance. Your belief. Your co-oping. Often even with vastly unequal power, you can find or force an opening to fight back. In your time many without power found ways to fight. Till that became a power.” – Marge Piercy

...and beyond that, I know I'm a sucker for this kind of song, but WHAT a song. My personal theory is that there are a ton of cool connections between Rodrigo and Springsteen as songwriters/performers (I could give a full lecture on this but won't here), and this track is more fuel for that fire.
