It's important to find small joys in this life. This is why I'm here to tell you about Second Breakfast. On Tuesdays, I do a noon yoga class. I can't make it from my first breakfast at 5:30 to my lunch at 1:30-ish. Enter Second Breakfast.

By the time I get to Second Breakfast at 10:15, I've already been working for 4 hours. There's a weird joy in just walking away from the computer in the middle of the morning and having a bonus meal. Highly recommend.

residents are likely to see green dye in a creek during a stormwater inspection. you do not need to call us if you do. residents are unlikely to see Green Day in a creek during a stormwater inspection. you are strongly encouraged to call us if you do.

Notice: Our inspection team was conducting a sewer dye test in 11105 W. Pleasant Valley Rd. in Parma this afternoon. As a result, an eco-friendly green dye may be visible in Baldwin Creek near the location marked on the map. The dye poses no environmental risks.

I tweeted about this guy last night and got all these replies from random people who said he'd saved their baby's life. Fuck being rich I would love to have been this guy, imagine how cool it would be to know you'd helped so many people. We need to name an airport after him or something

Helpful tool for tracking what happens to IRA funding

Clayton Page Aldern@compatibilism.bsky.social

ICYMI, last week we published an interactive map of more than $300 billion worth of Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law funding. Enter your ZIP code or city and a search radius and find projects in your area: grist.org/accountabili...

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts. The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails. The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

As frequent wildfires become the new normal, even people not directly threatened are concerned with what to do about the spread of wildfire smoke. It's important to have a plan. Here are simple, effective ways to get rid of the wildfire smoke in your home. nyti.ms/3WbyFxX

I live in the western U.S. and know that wildfire smoke is not something you want to mess with. I've had a good experience with Bona Fide Masks, which currently has a 25% discount. bonafidemasks.com

PSA to my friends in California near the fires: breathing in wildfire smoke is really bad for you (even if it’s not super thick where you are) but if you have face masks (N95, KN95, etc) those can help a lot

Seems like most intern and research opportunities for undergrads are for juniors/seniors. Does anyone have tips for a rising sophomore (class of 2028) to find summer 2025 opportunities in physics or math?

Things that have happened at least once that I know of: Someone getting a science job they saw advertised on Bluesky ✅ Someone getting a grad student position they saw advertised on Bluesky ✅ Someone citing a paper they learned about on Bluesky ✅

Bold of them to think that I can tell any influencers apart.

Mia Sato@miasato.bsky.social

New from me: Two influencers make very similar content promoting Amazon products. They dress the same. They buy the same stuff. They even have a similar tattoo. Now one is suing the other, claiming her rival won't stop copying her. But who influenced whom? www.theverge.com/2024/11/26/2...

I thought I'd lost my ability to be shocked by a terrible press release. I was wrong.

"Barefoot is the most awarded wine brand in America, much like the G.O.A.T Simone Biles," I say. The doctor shoots a glance to my wife, who has begun to cry again. The late afternoon winter sun covers my hospital bed in pale light. "Much like the G.O.A.T Simone Biles," she tells me, bravely.

I wrote a book! The timing is... weird, to say the least. But it's here, it's real, and it's available for purchase at your favorite online bookseller. Buy a copy. Buy several. I won't judge. Note: I was fully unprepared for how weird it was to hold my own book in my hands.

"Science isn't finished until it's communicated" On this weeks pod, acclaimed #scicomm leader, A/Prof Jen Martin shows us that communicating science in inclusive & non-elitist ways is not an ‘optional extra’, but a fundamental part of the research process #hps #philsci 🧪

I did not know this.

#Milton: This is a terrific tip from the Insurance Institute for Home and Business Safety (IBHS). Everyone knows to close your exterior windows and doors. But also closing your interior doors can be just as important in limiting pressure on your roof.

Remove a letter, ruin a movie: To Cath a Thief (an uncomfortable medical drama) Guess Who's Coming to Diner (breakfast served all day) The Princess Brie (a cheesy adaptation)

We look at things in silos. I talked with a biz insurance expert who said that they only analyze data for the event itself (fire, flood, wind, etc.). There is no analysis of human impacts: "what if workers can't get there" or "what if the food/water supply is cut off to people." 1/2

Andrew Sobey@andrewsobey.com

So it doesn't surprise me in the least to learn that we've historically looked at hurricanes as just the storm itself and not the human impacts that ripple out from there. 2/2

Would totally go based just on this man's willingness to play along. (Also the final "slay" is impeccable.)

Gotta wonder if Leeds Royal Armouries is ready for the tourist surge that is about to hit them...

I like to remind everyone of this.

When you see a peer-reviewed scientific journal article, it often says “pay $35 to read this.” Did you know that $0 of that goes to the authors of the article? Just email us and we’ll be happy to send you a copy for free. We’re usually thrilled that anyone cares. 🧪🦑🦈
