History shows where devaluing an entire racial group leads. Well, I say "history". We can see right now what the dehumanisation of Palestinians leads to.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

* I say "been done" deliberately. This hasn't just happened - hatred has deliberately and cynically been spread to empower and enrich. A tale as old as time.

I suspect that it may be our tech CEOs who live in a bubble I guess if you're surrounded by other tech CEOs it's probably hard *not* to assume everyone wants AI

From ~100% to just one third. The world of transport has changed. Some people (and countries and companies) just haven't accepted it yet.

Nicolas Fulghum@nicolasfulghum.bsky.social

In September, China's combustion vehicle (ICE) sales dropped to just a third of the market for the first time Battery electric vehicles are getting close to half of the market (47.3%), while Plug-ins added another 19.7%. Only 5 years from >90% to 33% ICE.

I'll just point out once more: the Republican case to voters, today and for the last 50 years or so, relies on lies & falsehoods. If you could snap your fingers and force everyone to speak only the truth, Republicans would never win a national majority again. The lies are central & load-bearing.

Trump: "They want to cut your children. It's unbelievable what they do. Your son leaves as Jimmy and comes home in three days as Janet, and they don't even ask you. They can take your child out of school and do whatever the hell they want. Minnesota is one of those states."

I have mixed, complex feelings regarding the whole zionism = racism debate. I found @georgemonbiot.bsky.social's thread both thoughtful and thought provoking.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Call me a masochist, but I'm returning to this issue, as I feel it has been poorly understood. Please read the whole thread before responding. First, I hope we can agree that the Israeli government is committing genocide in Gaza and horrific crimes in the West Bank and the wider region.

For me, it's critical that (whatever else we do) we remember that not all jewish people are zionists. and not all zionists support the actions of the Israeli government.

I don't say this out of support for zionism. But too often it is treated as the same thing as support for the state of Israel in its current form, with its current government.

I've never been able to tell if Trump 1) knowingly lies or 2) is only capable of thinking about what benefits him - truth is irrelevant This makes (2) seem increasingly likely

Reading proofs from book & remembering what I wrote in 2015: "I am very concerned about the future of AI. Not because of the risk of rogue machines taking over. But because of the homogeneous, one-dimensional group of men who are currently involved in advancing the technology.”

The founding story of Israel that many (including me) were brought up with, is that it would allow Jews facing persecution to seek refuge. How interesting to hear accepting refugees refereed to as "Islamism". I guess there are good refugees and bad refugees.

Israeli minister calls Shabana Mahmood an Islamist, because erm, erm, erm

It's not only weird. It's also alienating.

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

Have been listening to a whole bunch of climate week panels and in so many of them, people word sentences in chatbot-structure. "It's not X, it's Y", weirdly punctuated sentences. It is SO SO WEIRD once you notice it

We see the same trick with climate change. "The answer is not to stop fossil fuels overnight" No-one is asking you to. But we have been asking you to start work on this for DECADES.

Blanche on AI: "The answer is not to just all of the sudden try to regulate this"

I feel like I've wished on a monkey's paw. Always wanted the emissions of aviation to be taken seriously by top US officials. But... not like this. Not like this.

And why are they calling themselves the Environmental Protection Agency when they refuse to protect our environment?

Robbie Andrew@robbieandrew.bsky.social

Not to quibble, but why are they calling them greenhouse gas emissions if they do nothing to the climate? www.epa.gov/newsreleases...

Winter solar generation is now higher than summer generation was little over a decade ago. Absolutely wild, given this is the (not-so) sunny UK we're talking about.

Molly Lempriere@mollylempriere.carbonbrief.org

Solar generation reached record levels over the summer, with 8.8TWh of power between June and August, CB analysis shows This is in part due to the very sunny summer months, but also the continued growth in solar capacity, helping to boost supply and cut bills www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-...

All that compute and the tech bros still can't afford a "."

The “head of strategic futures” at OpenAI just went on an unhinged rant against social security sometimes I feel like these tech companies are actively trying to alienate as many normal people as possible

Not loving seeing this record broken about 6 months ahead of schedule...

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

The daily global average sea surface temperature has just reached its highest level on record, per C3S. "The timing of the record is particularly notable. Global ocean temperatures are typically highest in March and April, following the austral summer, yet this record has been reached in August."

Is the record breaking El Niño down to climate change? Maybe. Is climate change making the devastation worse? Definitely. youtu.be/0xyKfzljeD4?...

🚨 OCEAN HEAT: We are entering uncharted territory. Record-breaking ocean temperatures are pushing ecosystems closer to dangerous tipping points. Fossil fuel corporations and big polluters are gambling with a liveable planet for profit.

Who woulda thought that constantly attacking trans people would lead to cis women getting attacked? Literally all the trans people and queer women who warned you about exactly this.

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

Once again I must note that a major goal here is to destroy women’s sports. By redefining any woman who defies their strict rules for femininity as a “man,” they basically deny that women’s sports are real. Because, to them, a female athlete is not a woman. sports.yahoo.com/articles/wnb...

As a climate scientist... no, I don't remember that time.

Mrs. Betty Bowers@mrsbettybowers.bsky.social

Yeah, but I also remember when the Republican Party, under Ronald Reagan, completely ignored the AIDS crisis to better pander to bigots like Jerry Falwell. So no applause.
