Absolutely incredible: Tuesday morning's high tide in #Miami exceeded the major flood threshold... that is the 1st time it has ever happened in the city's history without a hurricane storm surge.
It tied (within 0.1 inches) the storm tides produced by Irene on Oct 15, 1999 and Wilma on Oct 24, 2005.
Astonishing! During this morning's king tide, Miami crossed the threshold for "Major" flooding without a hurricane for the first time. This was the city's highest water level in 11 years, and 3rd-highest since 1994. Yellow highlights: 8 of 14 top spots are from king tides during the past 2 years.
Today, we cover record king tide flooding in the Southeast U.S., record river flooding the Four Corners region, plus cyclones in the WPac and Bay of Bengal: yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/10/reco...
Los Angeles and San Diego had their highest coastal water levels in over a century of records during high tide today. (San Diego's record was a tie, but there was a glitch that prevented the peak from being recorded). Top-10 marks from 2026 highlighted are in yellow. @edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social
In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web.
🗳️ #VoteClimate if you care about the world that you are leaving to your kids, grandkids, and your great-grandkids.
US media is tragically failing in its duty to inform the public about our climate trajectory and solutions
Thanks to @michaelemann.bsky.social for sounding the alarm
I discussed the new U.N. report on breaching the 1.5C dangerous global warming limit (and the unhelpful green-lighting of new North Sea gas drilling project by U.K. Prime Minster Andy Burnham) earlier this evening with #BBCNews:
I have one word to describe Super Typhoon #Champi ( #29W ): Wow.
Not only has it rebounded rapidly after its second eyewall replacement, but it has regained Cat 5 intensity with winds of 155 kts. It still has time to strengthen more before the environment becomes less favorable.
"The last three months were about three degrees above average, hotter than the Dust Bowl summer of 1936 and the heat dome of 2021, and tens of millions of people can’t afford to pay for the air-conditioning that helped keep them safe in the deadly heat." via @nytimes.com
After #Champi's excruciatingly close call w/Guam, the storm seemed to get even more potent. And in fact, JTWC has retroactively upgraded it to Cat 5. Odds favor Champi hitting that mark again this week. Full scoop from @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and me:

In the latest Digging in the Dirt podcast, I talk with @digginginthedirt.bsky.social about the developing super El Niño, the Nor'easter that washed out the coastal highway to North Carolina's Outer Banks, and the future mass migration of people from the coast because of climate change.
40% of *everything being shipped everywhere on Earth* is fossil fuels
Just an absolute laughing-stock clown-show of an energy source. This is laughably absurd, why do we treat this like it's normal and good
Fossil fuels are a satirical fuel

Here it is: My big October update on the now near-record/record-strength El Niño event and the still-increasing likelihood of significant California impacts this winter. This deep-dive post is meant to accompany my Tuesday 1pm PT livestream.
Update: Now Post-Tropical Storm Rachel has made landfall along northern Baja CA north of Ensenada. San Diego is thus spared brunt, but bands of torrential rainfall & severe thunderstorms are occurring from CA's Imperial Valley eastward into AZ, w/serious flash flood threat. #CAwx
