Cat is 100% right about this. Obstacles, strife, friction -- these are REQUIRED ingredients for being human. Our capacity to feel good tracks with our capacity to feel bad, because really it's the capacity to FEEL. If AI makes everything convenient, humanity devolves to isolated socialslop.
From my new essay on AI and the end of humanity people seem either weirdly excited about or weirdly willing to lay down for: catvalente.substack.com/p/all-you-ne...
On the subject of AI. People don't realize how important what @courtneynash.bsky.social is writing about here is to the whole scene: resilienceinsoftware.org/news/11560646 If you believe this take [and I do] it completely changes how you think about integrating and applying AI to engineering work.

I've been mapping the companies impacted by the AWS outage on October 20th, and trying to find the secondary interdependencies—when companies or services that other companies rely on go down from the outage (e.g. Slack). This is just a snapshot, here’s the interactive version: www.thevoid.community
Outages like today's AWS incident don’t have a single cause. They are the result of countless contributing factors and conditions that cascade through complex systems. While the global internet is remarkably resilient, it is not immune to these dynamics of unforeseeable interactions. 🧵-time!
As our dependence on digital infrastructure deepens, more lives are increasing impacted by the reliability of that infrastructure. We all depend on it, and inevitably, that infrastructure will fail. How quickly and effectively we can recover when that occurs is the key to moving forward.
If you are looking for ways to improve the reliability of your system, I conveniently wrote a book to help you get started: amzn.to/3bjsRJ9

Christmas of 2012, AWS suffered a similar outage to the same region US-East-1. Netflix’s entire streaming service came down. It’s why we built Chaos Kong. We didn't just accept the disruption and move on. Instead, we changed everything about how we respond to incidents across Engineering.

True resilience means correlates with adaptive capacity: designing for uncertainty, understanding how failures propagate, and building sociotechnical systems that can absorb shocks and recover gracefully.
It's tempting at times like this to monitor dashboards, build up defenses, and dive deep into your technical stack. You'll make better progress if you focus on the impact to your customers, dive deep into your organization's culture, and question how your org chart reinforces your style of response.

Showing off my local Rails app asynchronously, without screen-sharing, and without deploying it. Sorta like ngrok but designed for long-lived connections, it's open source, and the service is cheaper. How cool is that? www.loom.com/share/3fdd5c... #Elixir #Erlang #RubyOnRails
One of the teams that I work with, HiBeam <https://www.linkedin.com/company/hibeamdev/>, has a new software switch SaaS in alpha. There really isn't a name for a product like this yet. The public URL is rerouted through something like a reverse-tunnel back to the app running on my laptop!
