Did you know the Wright brothers had a sister? Katharine Wright was not only a caretaker to the Wright family after their mother died and to Orville after a test flight injury, but also a college graduate, a teacher, a suffragist and a member of the Wright Company alongside her brothers. 🧵

Legit academic book reviews written for a public audience?! Is that allowed?! Jokes aside, the “public” NEEDS this—esp. as AI slop & SEO junk overtake web searches, media literacy lags, public-oriented review pubs close, & others pivot to quasi-puff pieces to maintain positive trade-press relations

This was a fantastic review. I've added another book to my TBR pile (one of them was already on it, lol).

I was just in the Twin Cities for a conference—my first time in MN—and the worst thing was my GPS not routing me well around road construction. I walked from my hotel to a restaurant and back. I felt safe. I was safe. The only upcoming ice in MN should be from any blizzards the winter might bring.

I look forward to seeing it!!

Just got word that I get to pick up our @draftingthepast.bsky.social merch for member plus and founding members tomorrow, and I think this calls for my inaugural unboxing video!

Off the top of my head, from movies: - The look of the little sick girl in *The Sixth Sense* - The man melting sequence in *Volcano*. - The laboratory jumpscare in *Independence Day*

Sleepy Hollow Reviews 🎃🐎@sleepingvillage.bsky.social

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

Oh! And giant Ursula, including Eric ramming her with the ship, in *The Little Mermaid*! I know she was the villain but that whole sequence is pretty scary, especially when you're little. The stampede sequence through to Mufasa's death in *The Lion King* was pretty intense as well.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

This is ridiculous. Why is this our timeline

I get really annoyed seeing so many people say "Since everyone uses AI to write papers..." or "Referee reports now are just written by AI..." Look: Everything I have written has, for better or worse, been my own writing. Don't project your cynical expectations on my work. Seriously, screw gen-AI.

I may be behind in listening to recent episodes of @draftingthepast.bsky.social, but I've been listening all along pretty much since it started. The show accompanied me this summer when I drove about 600 miles between home & a visit to the parents. So I just put my money where my ears have been.

I'd be listening anyway but it feels like the right thing to do--and at the present moment, I can do it, so why not? It's my money, I can use it when I want to use it. LOL. I look forward to more great episodes and a scholarly community dedicated to great, non-boring history.

(When I saw it was monthly rather than all at once, I was like 'Oh that's doable' because I had first thought, 'Oh no, I can't, sadly,' when I thought it was all at once. So happy that there was a monthly option.)
