This is essentially virtue ethics for writers! It eloquently expresses the limitations of LLMs for feedback (something I've noted in my essays on ethics and AI) and makes a compelling case for the collective practice of critiques in being a better writer (rather than creating a better product).

Through my writing life, nothing improved my writing more than participation in peer-based workshops: where a group of writers at about the same stage in their artistic development gather to read one another's work and offer feedback specifically aimed at improving each other's stories.

Re-upping in honor of the first trade ('Fire') of #fmlcomix coming out soon. Buy it! What an outstanding series by @kellysue.bsky.social and @davidlopez.me comicphilosophy.com/mg44

FML comix by @kellysue.bsky.social @davidlopez.bsky.social Cris Peters @claytoncowles.bsky.social @laurennmcc.bsky.social is a hilarious, heartfelt and educational read. It expertly blends 3 virtue ethics theories: care ethics, Stoicism and Buddhism: comicphilosophy.com/index.php/20... Kudos to all!

With the launch of Marvel's VisionQuest series, now is a great time to refresh on moral philosophy behind the Vision: comicphilosophy.com/8rur My ethics overview draws heavily on the outstanding comics series by @tomking.bsky.social and Gabriel Hernandez Walta, exploring free will vs determinism.

Marvel's Vision is a great character through which to explore identity metaethics and free will/determinism thru a neuroscience lens comicphilosophy.com/index.php/20... @tomking.bsky.social wrote a phenomenal 2016 series, and @thesteveorlando.bsky.social is off to a great start with his new series.

This is a great essay, really on point for why group identity breaks down when ideology is composed of disparate facets. FYI, I provide a brief intro on Rawls and the moral basis of social justice in my recent Drome ethics review: comicphilosophy.com/oxng

Some people were making me mad on the internet so I wrote a blog post about it. On the different reasons for people have for being left wing and how people manage the psychological tensions of the fact that they come apart. sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-...

Drome by @jesselonergan.bsky.social deserves all the awards and praise it is getting! This creation myth story hits all the big beats of normative ethics, along with some interesting takes on social structures ethics. Check out my moral philosophy overview of it here: comicphilosophy.com/oxng

An interesting and thoughtful commentary about using the feminist dystopian comic Bitch Planet in educational settings. Well worth the read, including the full roundtable (link at the end).

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social

In a 2016 roundtable moderated by Kate Tanski for Women Write About Comics, educators/scholars Elizabeth Coody, Rachelle Cruz, Andrea Horbinski, Chandra Jenkins, Nancee Reeves & Ambria Taylor discuss the rewards & challenges of teaching "Bitch Planet" in various educational contexts. 1/10 #Comics

This is an interesting article, and I'm not just saying that because I'm referred to as a "modern Batman writer" in it. Though that is nice.

Eric Marcotte - Comic Philosophy@comicphilosophy.bsky.social

Batman’s moral philosophy has always shown aspects of all three branches of normative ethics – often at the same time! In this overview I cover the evolution of his ethics (and no-kill rule) in the comics, profiling historic writers like O’Neil, Miller, Moore, Cooke... 1/3 comicphilosophy.com/qdye

Some kind words about my review: "Your deconstruction and explanation was fantastic. I really enjoyed your analysis as “Sleep” is a wonderfully atmospheric and intricate book. Your breakdown truly captured the nuances of how the narrative and visual cues work together." -C @zandercannon.bsky.social

Sleep by @zandercannon.bsky.social is more than just a compelling, inventive comics take on the classic Werewolf or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde gothic horror comicphilosophy.com/e3a6 It presents a normative ethics problem along the lines of the zero-sum, no-win scenario of the Trolley problem. .. worthiness, written from Mjolnir’s perspective. I marvel at its brevity and precision – and crudely fall short in my own ~2,200 word depiction of the normative ethics (moral philosophy) problem at the heart of the tale. Oh well, I guess we all have to start somewhere!

Good introduction to a particularly dark chapter in superhero comics. I provide more context on Shooter and Claremont's involvement in this fiasco in my ethics overview of Captain Marvel: comicphilosophy.com/index.php/59wz

TBT: Revisiting the Infamous Avengers #200 – and its Aftermath, Avengers #200 (1980) was meant to be a creative highpoint for one of Marvel’s flagship titles. Instead, it’s become infamous as a dark moment in the history of Carol Danvers, and of superhero comics in general. 1/9 #TheMarvels

Nice to see a thoughtful normative ethics analysis in the popular press for a superhero character.

Good overview of this event, although I would have ranked it higher in my personal pantheon. I did a full analysis of the Progenitor's judgment system, if anyone is curious about the ethics of Gillen's event: comicphilosophy.com/7do2

#EventsDearBoy 21. A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY (Marvel, 2022) The chief Eternal starts a war of choice with mutant homeland Krakoa to shore up a fragile political position; Tony Stark decides to stop it by building a God. Things get philosophical. This should probably not be your first ever Big 2 event.

An absolutely fascinating reframing of my recent Image series SLEEP (now collected in hardcover and TPB) that names and weighs the various moral philosophies at play in both the protagonist's and the townsfolk's actions. A very cool analysis of something I only meant to be a ripping yarn!

Great deal for Supergirl fans - 29 series, for only $25 CDN! Includes the excellent King & Evely Woman of Tomorrow series I have just reviewed: comicphilosophy.com/tc4d I love Humble Bundles, great way to digitally collect series.

Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic that inspired the DCU’s new film that’s now in theaters! The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic bundle supports Binc Foundation | https://bit.ly/4uQex2z

This is most succinct and accurate depiction of King & Evely's series I've read. Great to see accounts like this on Bsky! #supergirl Their piece alludes well to the series' ethics that I describe in detail on my site: comicphilosophy.com/tc4d

While it is unfair to judge a movie before seeing it, there is an interesting opportunity with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to speculate on how such a dense, complicated, and challenging story might be adapted for the cinema and what that might say about transmediation in general. #supergirl 1/12

outstanding visuals to convey its core ethics message. In addition to the characters' ethics, I also review the use of King's unreliable narrator device - which compares favorably to Kazuo Ishiguru's famous use, creatively adapted to a visual medium. A worthwhile read for superhero and ethics fans!

Very good read on how best to revitalize Doctor Who. At the risk of over-simplifying, largely boils down to restarting as Nu Who did, but making sure to include some classic elements. As a fan of the show during both time periods (my adolescence and middle-age), that has the right ring to me.
