When I was struggling through a long stretch of burnout before the pandemic, a counselor suggested trying to remember something that had made me happy in the past - a hobby, a band, whatever - and digging back into that, no matter how silly. Feels like good advice to try to return to now.
I gave a talk recently about re-enchant as resistance. I didn't put enough mention of the cultural dislocation so many of us feel at the moment or enough mention the things that help resolve that. We are living through a period of engineered disorientation and it damn well needs opposing.
Gavin Monks, 26, reportedly eschewed traditional Halloween fancy-dress options in favour of a costume he claimed would be βsure to strike fear and dread into the hearts of those around himβ: a neurotypical man blissfully unbothered by even a trace of autism.

You know when youβre at a pumpkin patch and you go in the corn maze and you get turned around a bit but then you find that other exit that goes into like the foggy wooded clearing with like the hut, and like that old lady comes out and says

Terence, this is stupid stuff:
You eat your victuals fast enough;
There's nothing much amiss, 'tis clear,
To see the rate you drink your beer.
But oh, good Lord, the verse you make,
It gives a chap the belly-ache.
Cutest pastry ever! Pumpkin bread filled with spiced pumpkin puree, even topped with a little chocolate stem! ππ Starbucks WISHES they spread this sort of seasonal cheer.
Grr, Tech Update Day is interfering with Sunday Reading In Bed Day. One way paper books are far superior to ebooks. Paper books are already all packed, however.
Autumn Dawn at Bolton Priory. The priory was founded around 1154β1155 when a community of Augustinian canons (often called "black canons" due to their robes) relocated from nearby Embsay. The land beside the River Wharfe was gifted to them by Lady Alice de Romille of Skipton Castle.
Flirting with a pain flare, so I need to take a couple of days off the meds that make my brain work. Settling in to watch The Witch and cull & pack my art supplies (mostly markers & pens) which I can do without brain.

Switching over to Children of the Corn (1984). Never seen this one; we're like 5 min in and already the adult protagonists (Linda Hamilton and some guy I don't recognize) are insufferable.
Was browsing randomly on Doordash and basically all the local places had DD-produced AI-generated menu item descriptions. Wondering why I would want someone to make me something if they can't even tell me what it is? This is a weird, weird world we're currently inhabiting. π€·ββοΈ
Voting in my local election while literally packing to leave the state was kind of a funny experience this week. Still important, and we did it! π³οΈ
Tried a pint of this from the grocery outlet (treasure trove of weird finds and/or closeout deals). Their gimmick is apparently "no added air" and I thought that meant it would just be good ice cream like B&J but no, it's a very different texture. Not bad, but not what I expected.
We report: later on, the sky is still working to sort itself out, all its pieces scattered every which way. The storm has moved on to the east, shaking some other trees that we do not know about. Many of the leaves of the trees we do know are on the ground now.
Got a "you have a MyChart message" notification as I was heading to bed last night; terrified me that it was cancelling a badly needed appointment next week. Nope, just a reminder to get the flu shot...that I got last week. πππ
What the World Actually Lost When the Library of Alexandria Vanished
Beyond the supposed single fire that destroyed it, what did the Great Library of Alexandria contain, and how much was truly lost with its destruction?

Give me library ghosts. Give me a chorus of discarnate tutting, reproachful coughs. Give me spirits which observe the Dewey Decimal System, returning misplaced books to their appropriate places on the shelves. Give me well-read spectres who whisper with references. β #CJosiffe#Ghosts
