Heideggerian, woke: 'Woke' segregationists, authenticity fetishists, hukou progressives, like 90% of those who say reactionary shit with woke language Anti-Heideggerian, woke: Those who actually believe in human rights and the brotherhood of man; the only people who should have any political power

'sit' is, I believe, the only English word to preserve all of its original IE ablaut grades: 0: nest e: set long e: seat o: sat long o: soot

Yoïn van Spijk@yvanspijk.bsky.social

Historically, the word 'nest' consists of two parts. The part 'ne-' is related to 'nether', while '-st' is related to 'sit'. The distant ancestor of 'nest' meant "place to sit down". 'Nest' is also related to Spanish 'nido' and its Romance relatives. Click my new graphic to learn more:

Everything feels disgusting when I'm sick. Food is nauseating. The shower is repellent. Even abstract concepts turn my stomach when sick. Parsimony? No thank you. Grimm's Law? Gross. A rectangle twice as wide as it is tall? Ugh, could you NOT, I'm trying to get better over here.

We have a choice in front of us. In my latest op-ed for Transformer, I invite employees of frontier AI companies to ask themselves if their work is truly leading us toward a safer future. Reflecting on these questions is hard, but we no longer have the luxury of time. We must act now.

transformernews.aiBengio: ‘If you prioritize safety, leave frontier AI companies’Writing exclusively for Transformer, the pioneering AI godfather is calling on frontier AI employees to join the fight for a safer future

I think Survival and Flourishing Fund funding was used as tool by the SFF re-grantors and advisers to make the other PauseAI denounce me in retaliation for criticizing them.

So if the midterm results are as decisive as polls suggest, is there a possibility of impeaching Trump again (the part that doesn't do anything) and actually convicting (part that does something?) and removing him this time? Presumably this would still require peeling off a faction of Republicans?

lmao, Scott Alexander the Neoreactionary Apologist seemingly unaware in his Messiah-posting that his other cult leader Curtis Yarvin loves comparing Yudkowsky to Shabbatai Zevi

Ivy is Beautiful and Talented@poisonivy.bsky.social

in today's edition of rationalists are having a normal one, scott alexander (i think) compares yudkowsky to jesus and aella to mary magdelene

Wentworth always struck me as tremendously stupid tbh. like, willfully stupid or something, his Dunning-Kruger levels are wild even for lesswrong. I guess adopting the attitude displayed in the OP screensnip is a way to make yourself stupid

Ivy is Beautiful and Talented@poisonivy.bsky.social

i love when these creeps are stupid enough to fuck up their own PR all the 'well there's no proof the CNC orgy is an AI networking event' people in shambles

A translation of & intro to early 19th century German Karoline von Günderrode's story "The Apparition." Beautifully written & concerned with the possibility of connection between the living & the dead, the piece links to Günderrode's metaphysics & epistemology: acezekiel.com/2020/12/01/k...

lrt: this is something that's weird to me re: deflecting responsibility from people - responsibility is a useful social fiction, so if we decide it's prosocial to ascribe responsibility to people at AI companies, we can just do that, it doesn't depend on holding they're ontologically responsible

It's been wild watching the MAGAsphere march towards "Effective Altruists are consequentialists who care about foreigners, and thus are communists who must be exterminated ASAP"

There are indeed thousands of LessWrong posts, as well as papers and books, which make a particular theoretical case for why AI will kill us all that many people find convincing. I'm going to try to explain it as faithfully as I can.

Colin@colin-fraser.net

interesting case of why someone might equate agi/superintelligence/etc with consciousness/sentience (I think views like this are pretty common?)

Chrysia@chrysia.bsky.social

Consciousness is a necessary step for matching or exceeding humans in cognitive tasks, as consciousness is what allows us to exceed simple logic.

but, like ... why are these things NOT widely known?

Arin Dube@arindube.bsky.social

Most US voters would be alarmed if they learned that leading Silicon Valley AI figures: 1) think AGI (artificial general intelligence, the idea that AI that can do any cognitive task a human can, making it a substitute for humans) is coming in the next few years and this is a very good thing, 1/
