Perfectly illustrates why SUVs are made for short people and us tall people prefer sedans. We literally cannot fit our legal in the driver's seat with a SUVs seating position. Best car I ever drove was a Volkswagen Beetle convertible (miss it). youtube.com/shorts/4pMr_...

At this point ASML could tell the Dutch government "We are not paying taxes anymore." Because apart from our real estate ponzi scheme it is the only strategic asset we have that generates actual wealth. www.bnr.nl/nieuws/econo...
Funny how the Netherlands is basically run as the 2010s GOP, Paul Ryan, case study on the following policies: -School vouchers -State layoffs -Health care -Social Security -Public Transit www.parool.nl/nederland/ka...
The Dutch have figured out how to have effectively 0 fare evasion on buses (it is in-fact the mode with the lowest fare evasion across all transit modes in the Netherlands) while charging a (expensive) fare AND NOT using proof of payment inspection.
The MTA suspended its fare evasion unit, known as the EAGLE Team, after its officers allegedly beat up a random passenger who had paid the fare. buff.ly/k7IAMul
Dutch and have student debt? ~$20,000 average? Behind on payments? No passport for you! Unironically this can result in a dual citizen losing their citizenship. In America this kind of treatment is reserved for parents who don't pay child support. universonline.nl/nieuws/2026/...
20 years of NIMBY lawsuits stopping a 10km tramline expansion (Tramlijn 19 in Delft) are finally over and the line is finally opened. Had to invent a new kind of catenary system. AFAIK there is now no new rail being constructed in the country. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjm6...
Is the Netherlands a dictatorship? Do they have a single personalist leader who rules with an iron fist? No, they are clearly a democracy, they simply have a functional transit planning system the prioritizes outcomes over process and does not have a million veto points.
Wherein the chairman of the Dutch Police LGBTQ+ caucus describes Amsterdam as no longer being tolerant towards queerness, explicitly as a result of the cities increasing religiosity. www.parool.nl/amsterdam/mi...
One bit of recollection from my days as a fire alarm / suppression executive. A better means of communication (also trick to sound smarter than you are) is to normalize costs to a $/ft² figure. Even though there are too many variables for it to be percise. It prevents them from scoffing.
"The proponents for single stairs have it mapped out that it costs $200k for another stair. I have no way to verify that. I find it hard to believe that it would be that expensive."
*whispers* the Dutch are no longer capable of building infrastructure. Just look at our budget this year, entirely state of good repair. Even stopping Amsterdam highway widenings and station access projects mid way.
The problem is that this is literally the exact mentality that leads to less transit infrastructure that costs more, serves fewer people, and takes longer to build. The end product is, across the board, fucking worse in every way.
Again, evergreen. We Dutch are more NIMBY and abuse process much more than the typical American. It is not hyperbole when I write every single housing development gets sued to the supreme court. But... American style "equity" process would generally be considered reverse discrimination here.

Oh look... Actual #humanscale that is of appropriate densities for a brownfield development in a city center with a housing shortage. Looking at you Europe weeaboos "wah wah Barcelona density wah wah."
While I was quoted in this article, I would like to say that I don’t totally agree with the headline – there are a number of now-residential buildings in the Financial District itself with higher FARs www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/19/1...
IT REMAINS SUPER WEIRD THAT YOU NEVER SEE PARKING PROTECTED BIKE LANES IN THE NETHERLANDS. You see enough of number 3 and tons and tons of sharrows in the driver door zone. Maybe Dutch planners do not trust passengers to check the door zone?
My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #8: A bike lane can be built with paint and plastic, made more durable with curbs and planters, or built into the infrastructure of a rebuilt street. All take the same space, but the cost and the feel of the street are quite different.
Grocery stores have really interesting anti-urban economics. 1. Their margins suck, so assembling expensive sq footage and difficult logistics really sucks. 2. Demand is extremely inelastic, with urban residents consuming less than suburban.
Kind of incredible just much density and new development it takes to get a proper grocery store in an urban neighborhood. A dozen five-over-ones around a train station is not enough :-/
It would be a total moral failing if the results of the inevitable political backlash is to return to a status of not enforcing laws, and maintaining a generation doomed to being an underclass, instead of using the same political energy to change immigration laws.
"The Immigration Crackdown Is Making It Much Harder to Build Houses" www.wsj.com/us-news/the-... "The arrests have also spooked foreign-born workers with legal status, some of whom have been caught up in raids and repeatedly detained"
Utrecht local public transit ridership down 14% year over year. I seem to recal @alonlevy.bsky.social saying bikes compete with local transit. But also this city is so small in population and sprawled out. www.duic.nl/algemeen/alg...

I am once again calling on ALL Americans to lose their drivers license and reapply under Dutch costs and standards (majority fail). Every single one of you sucks as driving and no amount of Dutch style infrastructure can fix that.
“I don’t want to look both ways when pulling out of my driveway, therefore we must remove this bike lane.” Amazing stuff
*whispers* it's just SRO. The solution to single male street homelessness is ALWAYS SRO + a few accessory supports as needed. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/13/o...
Dutch think tank for construction economics estimates 60% of demand for housing (people looking at available stock) is from migrants with next noticable effect befong from shrinking household sizes. www.binnenlandsbestuur.nl/ruimte-en-mi...

I am once again calling on all Americans to lose their drivers license and have to reapply under Dutch training and costs requirements. Everyone of you sucks at driving. P.S. police enforcing laws and consequences are also required for driver quality.
A driver caused a massacre in the Bronx today. Ran through a crosswalk and a red light and struck a bunch of people and five cars. What will the city council’s 17 e-bike bills do to address this?
Amsterdam public transit company wants to roll out small automated buses, followed later by replacing drivers on full sized buses. Reasons are staffing shortages and costs, bus drivers are about half the operating costs on lightly used lines. nltimes.nl/2026/10/09/g...
